Confused - first time setting up internet

Hi I have moved into a flat about a month ago and I want to setup broadband and internet but I don't know who to go with. There is a BT phone line inside my flat but I don't know if it is active? When I rang BT they said the activation fee is £50. I talked to TalkTalk and they said that there is no cost for activation fee as it is free and there is no cost to reactivate the line? But BT said there is a cost of £50 activation fee eventhough I already have a BT line. Is this correct TalkTalk don't charge anything for a new line but BT do? TalkTalk said they can just take over the existing line. I am confused as it is my first time setting up broadband and internet. Thanks.

If you just want normal broadband, not fibre, have a look at this link to the MSE deal. It ends today, so be quick.0 -
The line in your flat won't be active as the previous user will have cancelled it (assuming they have any sense). Even if they didn't it won't be in your name.
Different companies have different policies about re-activating a phone line - there is no fixed price to you as a customer as some will pick up the Openreach charges and some won't. Even those charging won't all have the same pricing.
You need to look at the various deals (and don't forget cashback options from TopCashBack, Quidco and others) and work out an annual cost and decide based on that. Take into account the minimum contract length. If you don't expect to stay in the flat long then don't go signing a 24 month deal. Unless you pay for things like the line activation it will likely be 18 months anyway.0 -

Oh right. So I will have to most likely pay to activate the line, when I spoke to TalkTalk they said there is no charge to activate the line but I didn't mention that it was from a previous tenant.0 -
The sky mse deals are very good.
I would just do that and get on with it.0 -

I think you misread the post, some companies will charge you (various amounts), some won't as they absorb the cost. The Sky link given earlier for instance mentions a potential £20 line re-activation cost.0 -

This is what I don't understand. TalkTalk said they install a new line for free. Is this true?0 -

TalkTalk said it costs nothing upfront and I don't have to pay my monthly payment until 4 - 6 weeks after the service is activated. Sounds too good to be true. And the router is free to deliver no charge and no charge to install a new line.0 -
So how much will TT cost for a year ?0

On their website it says £22.95 price fixed for 24 month contract. It takes around 2 or 3 weeks to get the line installed and activated. Do you think it's too good to be true? I would go with them right now but I'm waiting to get paid which will be next week. It seems to good to be true because I don't have to pay anything upfront and I only pay £22.95 after 4 - 6 weeks after the service is activated?0 -
