The EU won't be beastly to us because...

To do so would be in breach of Article 8 of the Lisbon Treaty. Here it is verbatim:
Lisbon Article 8
1. The Union shall develop a special
relationship with neighbouring countries, aiming to establish an area of
prosperity and good neighbourliness, founded on the values of the Union
and characterised by close and peaceful relations based on cooperation.
2.
For the purposes of paragraph 1, the Union may conclude specific
agreements with the countries concerned. These agreements may contain
reciprocal rights and obligations as well as the possibility of
undertaking activities jointly. Their implementation shall be the
subject of periodic consultation.
The EU wouldn't break their own treaty rules, would they?

Depends what you consider a neighbour and or neighbourly.
If i was to park my car across my neighbours drive, prevent the post man delivering to them or not let them buy things from my workplace i would expect them to say it was uncooperative. But then my neighbour isnt Russia.0 -
Oi!
Do you not know that any potentially pro-Brexit news will immediately lead to:
* accusations of expecting Brexit to lead to a land of milk, honey & unicorns?
* frantic researching from the unaccepting, hunting for obscure negativity to contradict the positivity.
* at the very least a denial the leaving the EU will plain not work for the UK. Dunno why mind it just ...... well, it won't. You see If *insert name here* isn't right - oh, and AFTER we've left. A long time after.
These are the less-abusive of what will no doubt soon be posted BTW.

To return to and reply to your post however, I touched upon this point quite a while ago now so I am pleased to see it as a separate question.
FWIW I think that this may well prove to be the UK's great "trump card" since it would at least appear to make any unfair conditions or anything adversely affecting prosperity illegal as far as the EU are concerned.
Interesting times are ahead for sure.0 -
I posted this somewhat tongue in cheek because I actually believe that Juncker, Tusk and Schulz are either unfamiliar with their own treaties or just pick the bits of them that they like. After all, the EU have failed to enforce their own rules regarding Germany's trade surplus which has breached rules for a decade or more, French budget deficit which is laughingly justified as a response to terrorist attacks and also Italy's bank bailout.
And when it comes to the way the EU has behaved towards some of its own members like Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Cyprus...........0 -

It's difficult to mitigate for cheerleaders.0 -
I suspect that the EU is trying to work out a way to be just beastly enough to the British to stop other countries from trying to leave while remaining friendly enough that the EU and GB can do business after the split.
Of course Britain is calling all the shots because cars so the EU will be precluded from any acts of beastliness.0 -
Really?
Some people really do need to keep more up-to-date: this within the last hour from Wolfgang Schauble:Asked whether he was worried about the possibility of a "cliff-edge", the finance minister said: "We are very concerned that it will not happen.
"We will not only be concerned, we will be engaged that it will not happen, because it would be a disaster for all of us.
"Now we can start to work and we will do whatever we can to avoid such a situation. I think it is possible to get it done."

The EU moved the goalposts recently, were you not aware?
Voting now means a "qualified majority" is all that is needed.
In fact now an agreement could still go ahead even if countries representing up to 35% of the EU's population voted against.

Yes it will be a problem for both the EU and the UK. The EU will have an early problem because it will need to set the 2019 bidget before it knows which way the negotiations will fall. If they guess it wrong there could be cash flow problems.
I suspect that the timing of the Artcle 50 start, being between the EU and UKs' fiscal years, will give some advantage to the UK in this respect. Every little helps!
But the bottom line is that it is everyones' interests to get things agreed at least in principle in 2 years.Union, not Disunion
I have a Right Wing and a Left Wing.
It's the only way to fly straight.0
