Gas safety certificate

Happy to take advice from the experts.

A question to the bit in bold, would the installation sign off have confirmed that the boiler is operating at the correct pressure?

Every installation instruction will ask for 20mb pressure at the appliance, this is based on a working pressure at the meter of between 19mb & 21mb, gas pipework should be sized according to the length of pipe the amount of fittings on that pipe & the gas rate of the appliance(s), once this is all worked out then the difference in working pressure at the meter & appliance should be no more than 1mb, i.e. 21mb at the meter 20mb at the appliance, problems occur if the pipe size is not worked out correctly or extra appliances are fitted or for example a normal boiler is now changed for a combi boiler that will require a lot more gas, there is very little pressure in the gas in your home it's all about volume hence the need for larger pipes,

The manu isn't silly & understands than you might not have 19mb at the meter so they make sure their appliance can work perfectly safely at a lower pressure, each manu is different with regard to this pressure so it's not enough to say this boiler will work at this pressure & this boiler won't,

So to answer your question in bold even if the boiler was installed correctly with the correct size pipe doesn't mean to say you have the same working pressure now, worn regulator, extra appliances, debris in the gas pipe can all effect the pressure

That's interesting. I hadn't heard of anyone having to replace the gas supply pipe when the boiler wasn't being changed. In fact, we recently replaced our main boiler and they fitted a new supply pipe at the boiler end. The previous boiler had been regularly checked and serviced with no issue of supply pipe raised.

• I didn't say you had to replace the pipe but things can change over time, a 12kw heat only boiler is going to use a lot less gas than a 24kw combi so in cases like that the pipe may well need to be upgraded & I believe the op said there was already an issue with the incorrect gas pressure so something isn't right with the installation

You are incorrect along with the police National Grid have right of entry to your property if they believe lives maybe at risk, if you refuse them entry then the police can & will force entry they don't need a warrant
The police forcing entry is not the same as Grid? The grids powers are not as far reaching as they have many believe they can gain entry if you grant it but if you refuse they need third party assistance e.g. police, warrant etc there are slightly different laws governing entry for theft of gas, electricity utilities etc. Granted I haven’t had a need to look at new regs, laws etc that may have been passed over past few mths if there are new I’d like to know which ?

Working pressure is also misleading not in respect of manu info but of utilities supply e.g. reading taken whilst x are using gas supply to road (potential higher working pressure ) 20 minutes later xxx using lower working pressure? Granted it shouldn’t drop below x but in real world ? I don't disagree as to pressure at appliance but that is in respect of working pressure of supply, If boiler serviced/checked etc 10 times before everything hunky dory and on then suddenly becomes not so ( excluding changes to regs fault etc) makes me curious as to whom is doing the test and why , There are plenty of reports of certain “English” gas company condemning , caping supplies to installation when absolutely nothing is wrong we visited one only a week ago where householder (85 year old) was told installation was unsafe, insufficient supply etc, Installation was new less than 3 mth old and carried out by the company that subsequently condemned it? Few hours later nothing changed all re connected and explained as human error faulty equipment.

This is less seen among independent gas installers but certain companies it appears to be part of the hard sell techniques they adopt,,,. OP hasn't stated why they need a cert, If previous have been issued, or why they believe its going to fail?

I know an RGI doesn't need back-up from a layman, but I can attest to this. I smelled gas last year and when the guy came out with his magic widget it turned out the gas was coming from the flat downstairs. When there was no answer he called the police and they broke the door down, no messing around, took about ten minutes from him making the decision to this happening. He told me that he could (was legally authorised to) do it on his own, but that it was less hassle all round to have somebody "official" actually doing the deed.

Most likely you could have entered yourself check lease most freeholder /lessee of another flat an agent on there behalf have the right.
So many types of entry, by force without force , unoccupied, occupied, temporarily absent etc mix in human rights, gas acts, health and safety etc
