Death in family and car not transferred

I hope someone can help.
A work colleague's father died last year and his car was then transferred to his daughter in laws name. At the time she didn't want it so my work colleague bought the car with the intention that his own daughter would use it to learn in.
He went and collected the car and it has been sat on his drive ever since.
He has just realised that the V5 has never been updated with new keeper details and although the car is taxed and MOT'd it hasn't been insured for 6 months and was never SORN'd.
He wants to know what the best way to deal with this is as the car is actually his daughters.

It wont be taxed, as when it transfers the tax doesn't, but not sure what your asking, just fill in the V5 with the new keeper details and send it off0 -

But it hasn't been transferred yet!
If it is still taxed, it will be in the former owner's name. When the OP sends off the new keeper's details any remaining tax will be refunded to the former owner.
Then the OP needs to wither tax and insure it, or SORN it, ASAP.0 -

When it transferred to the deceaseds daughter it would have ended0 -
If the car is uninsured whoever is the registered keeper will be getting in trouble/ fined.
Unless SORN you must insure even if it's off the road0 -

There's no fine for not sorning
If it's not taxed then whoever is the registered keeper will be fined for that though0 -

Was the V5 sent off and not received back or was the V5 never sent off ?
How long ago did he die ?0 -

From GOV.uk
You must insure and tax your vehicle if you don’t have a SORN. If you don’t, you’ll automatically be fined £80 for not having a SORN. There’s also a fine for having an uninsured vehicle.
The vehicle is taxed as the ownership wasn't transferred but no insurance.
The stupid thing is I told him what to do 6 months ago0 -
The only solution is to declare SORN now and see how it pans out.
Get whoever has the V5c to do it.
Then send off the V5c with change of owner.
It might slip through the system, it might not, but they can cross that bridge when/if they come to it.0 -

If it was taxed after being transferred to the daughter's name, then there'll be a fine under the continuous insurance rules.
If it wasn't taxed after the transfer, then there'll be a fine because it's currently unlicenced.
If it's currently registered in the daughter's name, then she's the one on the hook. BUT she can easily say "It was transferred to <buyer> on this date - I sent the V5C in.", with no legal requirement to chase if the confirmation is not received. It was her legal responsibility to transfer the keepership, but the buyer is a muppet for not noticing that he hadn't had a V5C, and not SORNing it himself.0
