o2 not providing what they offered, options?

I signed up for a 12 month sim plan, data sim, 4g.. 20gb
the speeds are atrocious, barely 3g.. so I went on live chat ( for 2 hours ) and they said I would have to pay a cancellation charge to end it early, but im not being provided what I signed up for.. why should I have to pay them? surely it works both ways?
anyone have any options?

4G is not available everywhere, does the coverage map show 4G coverage in your postcode? Do you get 4G in other areas? Is your phone compatible with o2 4G? (Not all are, a lot of cheap Chinese makes don't have the frequency included for o2/Voda).====0 -

coverage map shows excellent coverage
yes I get 4g everywhere

EE has a much bigger and faster 4G network, a small amount of research should have told you that before you signed up with o2 (who have the weakest 4G in the country, another fact a bit of research would have turned up).
When did you sign up? o2 give a 14 day satisfaction guarantee, if you've gone beyond that, why didn't you return it within the 14 days and cancel?====0 -

I have been with O2 for 12 years, had a mobile with them, then I saw special 20gb sim, signed up with that.. then got a ee promo data sim, realised speeds were so much better and o2's can't compare0 -

You'll have to chalk it up to experience, you have a choice of continuing its use it or paying to get out.
With EE's ESN rollout and massively better spectrum allocation they will still be markedly better than o2 in 12 months, you could consider changing near the end of your current contract.====0 -

What speeds are you getting exactly?

Just speedtested, around 300kb/s which is like 3meg, more like 3g
Had contract for few months now, only realised they were so bad when I tried an EE sim and get like 2-2.4mb/s0 -
I know you're looking to exit your contract OP given o2's speeds over 3/4G but in the meantime have you considered using the TuGo app when you're at home on WiFi?
