Looking at the sale of goods act posted above you should be able to take the car back to them. It's not acceptable for them to sell a car which has been cutting out etc.

I know when my friend bought a car he had some problems like what you have mentioned (cutting out, etc) he first got them to take the car back a nd have a look at it and then he returned the car because it kept doing it. I also know of someone else who bought a car that turned out to be dodgy and has since decided to go through the small claims court to get his money back.

I think you should tell them you want to return the car and if they refuse mention trading standards etc. I mean if it's started doing this now what other problems will arise when you have had it for a few months?! Get rid imo!
    :rotfl:
  • I'm a motor dealer, but give a months warranty from the day the car is collected. If any faullt is reported then we get on and sort it. Even if 3 months down the road the same fault comes back. We send our cars out with a full PDI and an independant MOT (for a second opinion).

Take it back, explain you're not happy with the car and you'd like it sorting otherwise you may be forced to get Trading Standards involved.

The horn thing is just plain mad and is very embarrasing, driving down the street and the horn honking. Did they know of this fault and intentionally remove the fuse?

If there was no fuse there when you went to replace it....probably yes (or if not them then the previous owner).
If there was a blown fuse there when you went to replace it....probably not.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Just out of interest did you pay for it on a credit card, if you did I would be calling the credit card company. After taking it in again I would take someone with you as a witness and ask for a written explaination (invoice) of the faults and remedy taken. Any decent garage would do this anyway. Tracking is a difficult one but if it was out before you bought it for any length of time it would have shown on the tyres. If the tyres looked ok and your saying that the tracking went after purchase then I see that as fair wear and tear. If they don'y fix it at the second attempt I would take the thing back and demand a refund due to loss of faith. You may have to get trading standards in at this point. Hope it works out.
  • the tracking was way out and the guy who fixed it said it hadn't been set after the new wishbones had been put on.

I payed for the car in cash, took a friend who says he knows about cars and he said it was a good car but now i think he was talking out of his rear too.

I'll take the advice you guys have given and get back with what happens.

Also, what if I take the car back and they want to keep it for a few days, then im !!!!!!ed because i have to get to work every morning and i can't get a bus that early in the morning and be on time to work. Im on a training part of this new job and if im late or miss a day then my contract is ended in this period!
  • Ask them for a loan car for a few days. They should oblige, really... Could be anything they have taken in PX with a bit of road tax on. Just something to use.
  • well they have blown me off today when i phoned to come in. He says he will ask around his mechanics with what could be up and then phone me back in a couple of days. Also said i should go out and get it fixed myself, it's not his fault.

Mmmmm, sorry to say but sounds like you've been stitched up good and proper. Now it's a question of how far you want to go with this. How the mechanics could diagnose a fault without testing the car is beyond me. Of course he will not call back, as he is hoping you will go away. I would now go to trading standards. I would also fire off a letter threatening court action unless a full refund is given, do you really think these muppets will be able to fix it? Time to get very arsey.
  • well i've just been on the phone to consumer direct 08454 040506 and they have told me to send of a recorded letter to the dealer with what is happenening to the car, what has been said between bother parties ie phoning me back in a couple of days etc which i am going to do.

Also i have a warranty from the dealer for the engine+gearbox, doesn't this count for anything?
  • Not worth the paper its written on by the sounds of it. Get to Trading Standards ASAP hun! Along with a recorded letter of complaint to them.
