Flight Cancelled, Can I Claim

I was travelling out from Aberdeen on friday 13th January to Frankfurt. I had a connecting flight to Leipzig on the friday at 9.30am I got a text at 5.00pm on the thursday to say that the flight to Leipzig was cancelled. I had the option of a refund or changing it for a train ticket, which I did as I had to get there one way or another. Just wondered if I can claim compensation for this.

Depends on the reason for the cancellation.

I'm guessing it was weather related (snow?), being as the morning flights from FRA to LEJ were cancelled, the late afternoon ones were delayed, and they got back to normal round 10pm. If so then no compensation.
