Dubai advice

Hi all,

In May my wife turns 40 and I'm thinking about taking her to Dubai for a week. We've never been, so know nothing about the place, what area to stay, what the hotels are like etc. Can someone help out please. I'd like to spend about £2k for flights (Manchester preferably but will do London) & hotel but not got a clue where to start.

Can anyone offer some advice please.

Many thanks.

I can't imagine spending a whole week voluntarily in Dubai, unless on business. It's more of a transit stopover for a day or two on the way further east. Is there something that attracts you to make a special trip there? How about springtime somewhere in Europe instead..?

We lived in Dubai over 20 years ago & returned for a 4 day visit nearly 2 years ago in the last week of May. The weather during our 4 days topped 40c, I wondered how I'd managed in that heat whilst living there.

There are a huge range of hotels, we stayed at one on The Palm on a half board basis. The roads are heaving but there is an overground metro which was cheap & easy to use. We found eating out & drinking expensive, we went to a bar in Dubai Marina during happy hour & a pint of beer & a glass of wine was £10. You can eat out fairly cheaply if you go somewhere that doesn't sell alcohol.

As for things to do, there's Wadi bashing, water parks, a ski slope, huge shopping malls (we found these more expensive than the UK). We went to old Dubai along the creek for the gold souk & spice souks, fascinating to walk around but there is hassle from shop-keepers to go into their shop. There's also star gazing & desert safari trips on offer and cruises around the marina.

You don't mention when in May you're thinking of going but please bear in mind the heat & humidity, if we went back, we'd go in our autumn or early spring when the temperature is bearable for us.

Our 4 day trip was approx £2k before spending money. You could possibly spend less by looking at an apartment rental or a lesser star hotel, do lots of research as it would be very easy to spend way over the £2k you're thinking of.

We found plenty to do for a week there last February - given that we just wanted some downtime as well.

It is quite expensive for eating out so budget accordingly. Alcohol only available in restaurants attached to hotels.

We enjoyed a desert safari, the Aquaventure water park, Friday Brunch - and seeing the fountains and shops at the Dubai Mall (where you'll also find the Burj Khalifa that a lot of people like to go up).

    I'd try October another time.
  • I've found plenty to do in a week, and also have been for 2 weeks no problem

When in Dubai you could always use the local working mens club, they are very cheap for a pint and a packet of crisps.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Can I ask why Dubai ?

Do you know others who have been or is it just a destination that you would like to go too ?

As others have said it seems an odd place to go for a holiday

I mean you can have a good time anywhere obviously, but when you have the whole world to choose from, why there?
