someone hacked bank details and spent on amazon - bank says it's not their problem!!

Hi,
Spotted a couple of transactions on my bank account - one for amazon, a digital download, and one for a pub in the US. Bank are saying they'll refund the US pub but not the amazon one, and i'll need to contact amazon about that. Trouble is I don't know anything about the amazon transaction, and don't want to give them my bank details!!! surely this is a bank issue??

Any ideas???
Thanks, WCS

  • When you say "hacked", can you elaborate? Do you know how your bank details (presumably your card details, not sort code and account number) were compromised?

Assuming it's a debit card transaction, ask the bank to do a chargeback for both transactions. Also refer to the terms and conditions for your account, and look at fraud liabilities. You might find a clause along the lines of "the customer has £0 liability for fraud where they are not at fault".
  • Thanks, bank are saying they cannot ask for the money returned? Is a chargeback something else??

Is it a debit or credit card transaction?

If so, simply report it to the card issuer as an unauthorised transaction.

I don't think anyone who hacked in to your bank account would be able to be able to gain enough information to make a purchase.

Why do you think your account was hacked?
  • Thank you - went back to the bank and explained again and they're refunding. It was a current account debit card transaction - well 3 transactions, 2 to amazon for digital downloads and 1 for a pub in the USA. I noticed them on my online banking.
    All done :-)

Are they not cancelling the card and sending a new one? Unbelievable...
  • Don't you HAVE to save card details with Amazon (to enable one click pay etc) so any guesses who may have spent money on the downloads close to home?

Don't think you have to save details - and oneclick isn't compulsory.
Amazon don't ask for the cvv code, so in theory fraudulent use of a card with just card number and expiry date is easier with them.
As the OP's case also involves a 'pub in the US' I assume the Amazon download might be there too, not necessarily close to home?

Same thing happened to me about two years ago with a gambling website. The fraud department phoned me up alerting me that all my money had been drained out of my account, was this me, so I logged in, checked, panicked and told them it wasn't myself. They closed everything down for investigation, changed my internet banking passwords, sent me a new card and then turned around and told me the transactions weren't fraudulent. The fraud department phoned me in the first place!

Anyway I sent a complaint and ended up getting my money back
