  • Except that if I make a future-dated Faster Payment, I am not giving my payee any assurance of getting paid.

A cheque is a "promise to pay" it is written in law. It does not matter if the date is future dated. A cheque written out to someone is acknowledgement of a debt.

Perhaps a PDF representation of an onscreen confirmation of an irrevocable post dated standing order confirmation would be a solution to paying for something when you don't have the money until after a certain date.
The fate of the cheque is in the balance.

How do you post a cheque to ensure it arrives before, but not banked until, payday without post-dating it?
Personally I wouldn't send a cheque (or arrange any other form of payment as i rarely use cheques now) until i had the money in the account and not reserved for another purpose.
  • update.
The bank rejected the cheque.teller accepted it, but the processor rejected it for being too early, even though it was same bank to same bank, and the balance was enough to cover it by a long way

The cheque had to be re-done again

Paying in slip ? - have we slipped back into the 20th century ? - all the machines I use read the cheque ;)

I don't know about other banks but the in-branch machine at my local Natwest requires EITHER (a debit card to be inserted then the cash &/or cheques) OR (the cash and/or cheques to be inserted with a deposit slip on top.)

Some of the Lloyds machines no longer need a card just type in the sort code and account number.

I'd find it easier to just stick a card in than remember yet more information!
