'Paying in slip ? - have we slipped back into the 20th century ? - all the machines I use read the cheque'

Paying in slip still used at all times for counter transactions at HSBC and also if paying in a cheque at a machine,

Or maybe they don't want the goods/services until pay day?

Don't send payment until payday then...?

An electronic/internet book of negotiable instruments slips may be of more use than a cheque system.

I can guarantee you that 99% of people can't define what a "negotiable instrument" is or what makes it negotiable. There'd be no point to it.

Also I have absolutely no idea what your proposed system would look like or how it would functionally be different from cheques or without any of cheques' drawbacks.

How do you post a cheque to ensure it arrives before, but not banked until, payday without post-dating it?

I'm sure he meant using a sensible payment method such as an online Faster Payment.

Sending a Cheque in the post to pay someone is like using a horse and carriage to get around!.

You're asking the wrong question, because you're assuming that you should use cheques to solve your problem.

If you control the payment, through Faster Payments, then the payment leaves your account exactly when you want it to and not a second before. And you don't need to p*ss around with bits of paper or the postal service at all.

Barclays have recently started accepting photographs of Barclay cheques made with i-phones / android phones rather than have the recipient submit the cheque in the usual way.

I dread receiving a cheque because of the effort required to bank it.

I'd prefer a unique virtual online 3D hologram 'thingy' with encryption instead of a just a photo. It could have a reminder of what you are paying for built into it. There may be other more practical solutions.

Just remember the easier you make it for yourself, the easier it is for the thief.

I far rather going to an office, having a bureaucratic admin clerk that rams a probe up my bottom every time I get my money, than using a mobile phone that somebody can clone.

Obviously, the probe procedure is only for serious amounts.

Personally if it's a choice between a man invading me rectally in order to carry out transactions or magical technology that allows people to clone physical objects perfectly, I'll choose the latter.
