ClearScore - someone registered an account with my email

I had an email come through today welcoming me to ClearScore. Yet I had NOT applied for an account nor do I have any interest in doing so.

So I went straight to their website (I never click links on unsolicited or suspect email) and yes there was an account using my email address.

Straight away I requested a password reset. When that came through I found the account contained not my information but the details of someone with a similar name. I hope resetting the password so quickly would have helped, but it may be too late for the other victim.

I can only wonder if ClearScore allow access to there facilities without an applicant replying to a confirmation email for someone to attempt this. Other than the welcome email I did NOT receive a confirmation email of any sort

This is a real concern as I can see an application panel for a credit card and things appear to track back to my name.

I have contacted ClearScore about this and the person whose details appear. Should I report this to somewhere like ActionFraud or my local police to get some source incident number to cover myself and perhaps the other victim?

Scary stuff.
Dave

    Sounds quite strange!

I can tell you I have been registered with clearscore for ages and have still not verified my email address so I would say yes they do allow access without verification!

I couldn't give any other advice but you certainly need to follow this up somehow.

Most likely scenario (since the other person's name is similar) is that simply mistyped their email address and then wondered why they never saw a welcome email.
  • Good luck getting any help from clearscore; I found them a nightmare to deal with.

Sounds as someone said like someone has gone through all the security but have then used the incorrect email address. I've recently registered with them and you do have to enter it twice, there are security questions but I don't think it asks you to verify your email... Going on memory here.

The good news is that YOUR data shouldn't be compromised. You can of course register your own clearscore account and check that as this is what would be used in the event you requested credit.

It does ask you to verify your mail. I still haven't done mine and it still pops up asking me to do it when I log in however they clearly don't do anything if you don't verify as I have been a member since it started so it's a bit of a pointless exercise!

Your email address is no way linked to you in any way so if someone wanted to fraudulently access your details they would make a new email address, so this is obviously a mistake.

You say that the account has a similar name to yours. Am I right in guessing thathat your email address contains your name?, if so I bet they just mistyped the email address when signing up to the account.

They are probably going to try to access their clearscore account again and it woll say the password is incorrect (because you changed it). So they will try and reset it and you will get an email saying someone one is trying to reset the password!.
  • Thank you to all who reply.

Clearscore have reply to my request and closed the account. I do think they need to reconsider their security. This forum has better security.

@ TadleyBaggie and @takman - Thank was my thought at first but as I have contacted the person whose details were visible (the information was on screen was sufficient to allow me to track them down) and they said that while the details were theirs, they had NOT apply for an account, and of course neither did I. It was at this point it became clear to both of us that it is likely that a third party could possibly be involved. I'm sorry but mistyping an email address is a mistake but keying the someone else's details and the wrong email is not a mistake.

@ASHP Hmm. that does sound like a seriously disturbing flaw in ClearScore's security. I did not receive any verification email (just a welcome). Yet the account and the gentleman's information was open to me and possibly who ever opened the account.

Well I have made ClearScore aware of what has happened, and notified the gentleman whose details were on show of the problem. I have done what I can to help them.

    Thank all.
