    Find the dipstick, check level, add fluid if necessary.

    this proves you know NOTHING about cars
    transmission fluid is not engine oil....
    you need to know exactly what to top up with and it's not easy to measure it like you suggest

    What on earth are you on about? Who said anything about engine oil?

    You are aware that dipsticks are not unique to engine oil, yes?

    You asked if it could be frozen. I answered.

    You asked how to top up your transmission fluid. I answered.

    You asked if it could be frozen. I answered.

    On some cars (Vauxhall Astras spring to mind) it can freeze, because engine coolant can mix with the transmission fluid due to a faulty oil cooler, and if the coolant is plain water it will freeze in the gearbox.
    Usually the gearbox stops working due to running on water before this.
    I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    (except air quality and Medical Science ;))

    I'd be looking at all the usual stuff first, (EGR) Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, (DPF) Diesel Particulate Filter, then split hoses or air leaks, particularly around the turbo. I'm really not convinced the handbrake makes no difference at 30mph though, when they are working they would make a big difference. On good old drum brakes you can lock the rear wheels, on disks the handbrake operates the hydraulics surely? I haven't tried applying a handbrake at speed for a good few years mind...

    The car would probably benefit from a thorough service by a good mechanic who inspects and adjusts things rather than a technician who relies on a code reader to tell him what to do.

    That is under entirely different circumstances due to a faulty oil cooler and as you state is due to water ingress, normally transmission fluid would not freeze in our climate.

    But that's not the same answer. Transmission fluid doesn't freeze in the UK climate, and that was the question.

    Not entirely sure what " it doesn't engage and after few times it cranks" means but possibly have recently had a similar problem, handbrake feels stuck on when first pulling away but hub not getting hot when driving which happened after having a sticking but now fixed handbrake on one caliper which was caused by the pad material coming unstuck from both pads on the previously sticking caliper. Its possible the brake overheated when sticking causing the aged pads to fail.
    Easy enough to check. Get the wheel off the floor and turn it backwards and forwards. you will feel the loose pad material binding as the wheel changes direction.

    the garage told me that they cannot see if my car needs transmission fluid and maybe top it up! is this normal for a garage?
