Thanks for all the replies. I would love cctv, but I always thought it wasn't possible. I could aim it for the front garden and just across the path and see how it goes? I considered it when someone totalled my car when it was parked on the roadside but never came to doing it. It's a fairly nice street so I could let the neighbours be aware, too.

Everyone hates these ideas until something bad happens on their street or someone is burgled then suddenly everyone is asking if anyone has cameras!

I've been and bought a dashcam today, 32GB SD card and £30 for fitting (because idk how) it's being fitted tomorrow. Unfortunately the person I spoke to said on parking mode it will basically retain some battery and only switch on if there is some impact to the car, so I guess it's not much cop for what I am after. Even if someone hit the car it will only record the aftermath ??

But I've been meaning to buy one anyway for every day driving so I got it. It will sync to my phone too so I would assume if anyone stole it I would have evidence.

Peace of mind and all that. Should be worth the money. Thanks again for the replies!

And the homeowner could well of been complying with the DPA by using correct signage etc.

None visible in the footage, and she was an OAP, so unlikely to be that clued up, I would suspect.

Which camera have you gone for? As far as fitting is concerned for that money sounds like all they're going to do is connect it to your 12v/lighter socket rather than hardwire it so I don't think it's going to be that effective when you're not in the car and probably wont be any good for the purpose you bought it for.

No, £30 is for hardwiring if you buy the cam from Halfords (something I only found out after I'd bought mine from Maplins, doh!).

Yup. This is right. Hardwired in for £30. It does say on the boards '..from £30' but when I asked they said it's always 30 regardless.
I could definitely just plug it into the lighter if I needed. Give me some credit.:cool:

    What camera?
Some cameras have a sophisticated parking mode where they will record before a parking incident, others will record at low frame rate whilst car is parked.
A cheap camera may not give the resolution you require to identify the vandal.

If you leave a dashcam in the car, wont it just get nicked?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I looked at the 412 and 312 nextbase ones. I bought the 312 because the only difference was a bit lower quality. I think the one I bought was 1080

Oh and it does say online (I didn't ask instore) it comes with a magnet mounting system. So I *think* potentially I could still bring the dash cam part inside with me of an evening if I wanted too. I won't know for sure until I get it fitted in today.

I intend on getting the driveway installed earlier this year than planned now, too when my other car is fixed. Which should help my situation in general.

I can't believe that anyone of adult age who knows that you have to work for your stuff would find joy in damaging someone elses. Pathetic really.

Hard wiring is good for keeping the wires tidy, you don't want the cable running from lighter port to dashcam as it's distracting :)

Sadly as above what you want the dashcam for isn't what a dashcam will do. Perhaps with a rear cam that was constantly recording that could pick up someone walking towards it, the vandalism happens and then front records as they walk away but even then it's not proof they did it.

Agree CCTV is better or perhaps move your car for a couple of days further away and see if the same car parks in that spot instead and I'd hazard a guess you'd have your culprit - someone who thinks you stole "their" space

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Break into a car to steal a dashcam worth less than £100 that probably won't even sell down the pub? Not had an issue with mine in 2 years, it's not hugely obvious but if you look you can see the lens easily enough
