BA alter departure airport - is compensation due?

Hello,
We booked our BA flights in Sept 2016 to Alicante from London City Airport for August 2017. In Jan 2017 we have been notified that these flights have been cancelled and BA have transferred our booking on flights on the same departure and return days but departing and returning into Gatwick Airport. This airport is further away from us and therefore will lead us to have to book a hotel room the night before departure and the flight takes off at 6am. Is BA liable to pay costs for the hotel and inconvenience?

as you have been given more than 14 days notice, compensation does not apply. If you do not want the flights from Gatwick, do not accept the changes and request a full refund0

They've also cancelled Madrid from LCY.
