TV without an aerial

Options
Hi

Currently have sky basic for which we pay £20 a month. What other systems are there available to access TV without an external aerial.
I would be happy using internet and although my TV is newish it is not internet enabled

Internal aerials are not good enough where I live , tried them before

You don't need an internet enabled TV.

Now TV is an option, streaming various Sky channels and on demand content across the internet. Other options are BT Vision, TalkTalk TV and Virgin TV - BT and TalkTalk use your internet, Virgin have their own network which you will need to check if its available in your area.
  • You can add the Amazon Fire sticks to that list or even just use your browser. It depends what exactly you like to watch.

If it's Sky you are thinking of getting rid of, you could just replace the Sky box with a freesat box (or freesat + for PVR features) , straight swap using the current dish (so no aerial needed), or use the Sky box without a Sky subscription to get FTA/FTV channels.

    Thanks Neil

Virgin is not available down this road

I did look at BT vision and it said you needed an aerial but Now TV seems like an option.
Internet speeds here are only moderate , about 6-8 Mbs but I would be prepared to switch to fibre

Am I right in thinking that the sky box will act as a freesat box as well so I will be able to get freesat channels but not the pause rewind etc . If I wanted premium channels then something like NOW TV would be an option.

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid

    Yes.

Yes. Now TV Entertainment Pass costs £6.99 pm and includes Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Comedy Central, Sky Living, Gold, Sky Arts, ITV Encore, Fox, MTV, Discovery, Nat Geo Wild, Viceland and ABC studios. It includes the live channels above, box sets and catch-up. There's no facility for recording.

    Thanks everyone.

So many options now as to watching TV. I think I can also buy a recorder to link in to record although not sure. Might drop into JL and ask

Really don't want to touch talktalk as had bad experiences in the past- ultra low speeds that they could not or would not resolve effectively forcing me into fibre at the time. Currently with Sky but contract runs out soon

What is preventing you from installing a roof top aerial? 6 month of Sky subs would cover the install, cost. If that is not an option, then consider a loft aerial. Ask a local approved installer what will do the job in your area.
That then gives you full Freeview access, and on demand services via a Humax PVR if required. One off cost, and no ongoing subscription required.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

A friend bought a house north of Alexandra Palace.

The mountain/hill blocks the terrestrial signal from Crystal Palace, which is the closest transmitter. Not just that, he gets no line of sight from the Sky satellite!

Some places are just meant for quiet contemplation and prayer.:o

    The mountain ...

    It's really not a mountain.
