I work at PAH, and it is mainly pets that people have returned, not worked there long, and to be honest, I don't really understand it myself!

I wonder if these people get their money back?

No, they don't carry out home checks, at least not here. At my local branch all the rats etc have the lifespan (eg 2-3yrs) written on their cages, and they have it down that Dumbo Rats live longer (They don't). Once I got two 'guaranteed' female rabbits & yep, you guessed it, they were out playing one day & I looked at the REAL female & said to the ex, hmm I think we have a pregnant bunny & a horny male! Took them vets & yep, one of each. If they can't guarantee the sex they shouldn't say (As most places don't!)
  • I am afraid the OP are right

    1) the "rescue" area is leased (at a cost) to a rescue centre - dificult to sway people to rescue who have arrived in stor for an impulse buy/immediate onwership purchase

    2) it houses returned or "too old to be cute" stock

these were both started in response to a TV showing how staff were trained to euthanase "lost stock" by putting them in a bag and either smacking them off a wall or putting abrick on their head.

I am afraid we are not a nation of animal lovers, just of animals owners until we can't be a*sed, and the huge majority of pet shops help this. They also sell complete cr*p for pets, e.g Bob Martins...

Working in a vets we see the fall out of this (and these are the lucky pets), with poorly care for animals and clients with no idea how much time effort and money they will take.

    Avoid like the plague.

  • There are so many genuine rescue centre's around.

We got our bunnies from here:

  • I have a problem with PAH calling it 'adoption' it isn't, it's still just buying animals the usual way but at a discount price. These animals aren't always rescue animals. My friend got her rabbit from PAH, she was the only girl left and her brother was in the pen next to her. We went back a week later for some bits and he was in the adoption bit with this notice 'Nobody wanted me because my brothers and sisters were prettier...'.

I got mine from RSPCA...please don't support PAH. They don't care about the animals just the profit.

well I love animals & agree that the pet shop shouldn't sell `marked down' animals however unless people stop buying `full price' animals I really don't see how they can be stopped - better than killing the `less popular' animals. If you feel really strongly you can make a formal complain to Trades Descriptions - however likely they might return to killing those they cannot sell.
  • Last week, my next door neighbours passed on their rabbit to me, which they had 'adopted' from PAH in the summer. WHen I picked him up, he had no food water or hay in his cage and was outside, alone in the garage. ANyway, I wanted to get him castrated, but upending him found no evidence of...er....balls (for want of a better word). My neighbour said they hadn't had him done, but she wasn't sure about what had happened to him before that.

I went to PAH and they eventually dug out the documentation, which stated clearly that (a) he needed castrating (which would have been on my neighbours' copy - go figure) and (b) that he was being 'adopted' for £15 as he was 'too old for sale'. IN other words, reduced for quick clearance.

If this was a genuine adoption scheme, he would have been castrated before adoption, my neighbours would have been homechecked and properly instructed about care (amazingly he seems healthy, but gut stasis could have been a real risk).

It is NOT an adoption scheme, it is a 'passed sell by date, reduction for quick sale scheme', but unfortunately until people stop buying pets at petshops, this will carry on.

Ironically, there's a trio of girl bunnies up for 'adoption' that they say they won't separate because 'they are bonded' etc - ha ha ha. SO what about all of the other (farmed) cuddlies that they are more than happy to separate on a daily basis. It's just a scam to sell on older stock. Crazy.

  • The PAH in Aberdeen has an adoption centre ... they don't charge for the animals in there, if you want one of the animals you can make a donation if you wish, but you aren't pressurised into doing so. I often see adult rabbits in there and hamsters that are too old for sale. I adopted a hamster as he had a broken leg and no one wanted him :-( he was looked over by a vet who said he wasn't in pain but would need extra care and attention. He's gone blind now too so needs even more care. But I don't like to think what happens to the animals that aren't adopted.

poor little Hamster guy...how on earth do you treat a broken leg for a hamster? i would imagine the leg is too small or a splint? and he would be too wriggly and active?
