Was this for items you bought online and returned to a store?

TBH, I would usually expect the store to accept the return, then pass the details back to their online department to process a refund.

(There may be online pricing, discounts, delivery costs etc, which the store isn't aware of - and typically they don't have access to their online orders database to check. And they probably wouldn't trust an invoice printed out at home by a customer.)

I have always been given the refund in store even when bought on line.

You would have to have some kind of invoice either that enclosed with the order or a copy of your order confirmation for them to do anything anyway.

I have never understood why tills require pin entry for refunds, as they are not charging you for anything?

If you try to pay money into a TSB current account in branch then they make you enter the PIN as well.

I tried to explain to them that if someone finds my card and they decide to come into the branch to pay money into my account then I authorise that transaction and therefore they should let them without asking for the PIN. They seemed perplexed by the request. Santander make you enter the PIN if you tell them it is your account, but don't make you enter the PIN if you if you say the card belongs to!a friend.

I think the boring answer is that some computer systems won't work unless you enter the PIN and some can be overridden but it's more work for them. When trying to make the most of the TSB 5% contactless cashback we found some stores could split payments over multiple cards, while others could only split between cash & one card. Some of the stores weren't consistent as some staff would refuse to go through the hassle.
  • Thanks all. I got my PIN from the online banking but didn't need it. They asked me to put the card in the reader for a few seconds and that was it.

Interestingly I then went to B&Q where the lady in front of me was returning some unwanted paint and she did have to put her PIN number in. So if anyone else is in the same situation you will need to have your PIN number ready just in case.
