Will I need the PIN number?

Options
Hi all

Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I bought something online using a Mastercard which I only ever use for online purchases. The item is not what I wanted and I can take it back to the store for a refund which would be easier than posting it.

However, I dont have the PIN number for the credit card and I wasnt sure if I needed it for the refund. Anyone know? Thank you.

No you don't need your PIN for a refund to be processed.

Usually you just insert the card, it processes then you take the card out.

    Not always.

I have been asked to input my pin at some stores.

You've had two different answers so far, so probably best to ask the retailer? Or say who it is and hope someone here has specific experience.

If you service your card online you can request to see the PIN. Our MBNA mastercard lets you view it by answering a security question and entering the last three digits from the back of the card.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

You can do the same with Barclaycard too.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Agreed, the last two times I have had a card refund I have been asked to put my pin in.

Was this for items you bought online and returned to a store?

TBH, I would usually expect the store to accept the return, then pass the details back to their online department to process a refund.

(There may be online pricing, discounts, delivery costs etc, which the store isn't aware of - and typically they don't have access to their online orders database to check. And they probably wouldn't trust an invoice printed out at home by a customer.)
  • Thanks all

The store is Currys/PC World. Going to log in and see if I can access my PIN number, if not I will just have to go in and ask.

Seems like there might be different processes for different retailers.

It depends on the store really. If I put money into my account via the post office, I'm just told to press the green button, and the lady who works there once told me if I'm ever having money put into my account and I have to enter my pin, then they're taking money from me, not putting it in.

However, many times I've had refunds and I've had to enter my pin. I had to do this in McDonalds a few weeks ago as well as many other places.

So like most people have said, it depends on the retailer. I've never had a refund at Currys to know what their policy is on this, but please do let us know how you get on

Is the card you have and shop you are going to contactless enabled, along with the amount being fairly small (sub £30)? If so, then you can always use that.

I have done it once when buying online stuff from M&S and then taking it back to my local store as I found it didn't fit, where they just refunded it back onto the card, so I just touched my credit card onto the machine, and it went onto the account a few days later.

I have never understood why tills require pin entry for refunds, as they are not charging you for anything?
