HP Envy 5646 Cartridge problem

I have had this printer since October 2016 and although I replaced the black ink with a genuine HP cartridge, I keep getting Ink cartridge problem, I replaced it with a non genuine cartridge same error message. Is this a common occurrence, is it reasonable to expect an exchange or refund. I haven't been able to use this printer in over two weeks now. Any suggestions...... I have followed the HP step by step guide to no avail.

Did you try the non-genuine cartridge first by any chance?
What is the exact error message you get?
Have you followed the steps here - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04326733 particularly resetting the printer?0 -
Hi... No I put the genuine cartidge first, I used the non genuine one which I had go as a spare. Error is Ink Cartridge problem, remove and replace cartridgeIf youcan lie down at night knowing in your heart that you just made someone’s day just a little bit better,you know you had a good day!!0
