  • actually; i didn't mention the 3 years thing when I asked for a quote.
    I was thinking 2-3 hours and 40=50GBP.
20 quid an hour is not NMW

You're probably underestimating how long it will take, especially if things need sorting through to decide what's rubbish and what's to keep.

I've had a few similar sessions over the years and three hours, especially with only one person, would barely scratch the surface.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I was just trying to give a little perspective.

It's not really a NMW job is it?

Cleaning a ordinary room that had been let go for 3 years is a big undertaking and with plenty of easy £10/hr cleaning jobs around, not many people would take on a bathroom such as you describe.

I'd rather make my money flicking a duster around a clean house, however boring and unsatisfying I found it, than bust a gut in someone's untouched Privvy and all the associated little surprises you'd find in there!

Hmm, I'm wondering why the family member who helps with the rest of the house "won't touch the bathroom". Be honest, is it really revolting ? If the answer is yes then frankly you aren't going to get anyone to do it cheap.

You mention de-cluttering. can you gently do any of that yourself? Have a box or just a carrier bag in there, every time you go in find ... two items that need throwing out, put them in the box/bag, when your relative comes get them to empty the box/bag into the bin and take it back to the bathroom to start again.

Once some of the stuff is out of the way a cleaner would have a better chance.

Once you do manage to get it cleaned then you really must get it done each week so it doesn't get horrid in there.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
  • I completely take the point that if it looked, or smelled!, like it hadn't been cleaned for 3 years...
My eyesight is bad enough that I can't see the dirt so I can't comment on that but it smells fine.

As for clutter... well; the bathroom cupboard doesn't fit in the bathroom as the room is so small so all the bathroom clutter is elsewhere. In fact its the least cluttered room in the house.

No-one who is self-employed and any good at what they do will charge you NMW. No agency will charge you NMW. In both cases, there are costs to be added on: tax, national insurance, holiday pay, pensions, travel, materials ...

Do you need a cleaner or would a decluttering specialist be more appropriate? As I said I've had several 'deep cleans' but things quickly went back to how they were before. I've been having sessions with a declutterer for a couple of years now and it's had a huge impact on several aspects of my life. It's not cheap though.

  • well as far as the bathroom goes, no clutter is not the issue. rest of the house yes, but doubt there's such a thing as a declutterer up here.

I put Oban into the search box and although the results were all quite far, the listings said at least a couple cover a large area - one said western and central Scotland.

  • thank you. yes that would be lovely for some of my rooms but I can't afford that right now.
