Can you please point me to the UK law which states that manufacturers have to provide a 6 year warranty on items?
I will need to edit my post to say "retailer" instead of "manufacturer".

But the whole point of my post is that they DON'T have to offer any kind of warranty at all!. There is only the consumer rights act which means that if a products is inherently faulty the retailers who you bought it from have to offer a resolution for up to 6 years. But remember only if it's proven to be "inherently faulty" and not just worn out or broken.

You have six years to make a claim against the retailer http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act

Yes, but having a 6 year period during which you can make a claim is not the same thing as saying that items have an automatic 6 year warranty, which is what was being claimed.

As that link says "This doesn't mean that a product has to last six years - just that you have this length of time in which to make a claim if a retailer refuses to repair or replace a faulty product."

After the first 6 months. the burden is also on the purchaser to show that the product was inherently defective. In the OP's case, the cost of getting a professional report to prove this would probably cost well in excess of the £85 that the item cost.
