Cooking for one

.... "sliders". Is it just me? I had to Google them thinking they may be something more exciting than small burgers, why call them some naff Americanised name?
They're just small (2oz) burgers ... that will slide off the spatula when you get them out of the pan... Tefal red spot non stick frying pan ...
Then I inherited the parents' one as I kept it when I cleared the house.
So now I've got three... still boxed up as I don't use the hob. But "maybe one day" I'll have the courage .... and so I'd hate to get rid of them.
Using a pan is a great/quick way to cook food for one, so it was the way I cooked a lot.
I even used to make bread in the frying pan0 -
Good evening all. I'm away from here for one day and you lot get up to all sort of discussions :rotfl: I had no idea about the pampas grass or Omo but did know about red lights. It made me remember a time on a holiday in Spain with my parents when I wanted an ankle bracelet to put on my then very slim and tanned legs. My Dad wouldn't hear of it and was adamant that 'only a certain kind of girl wears one of those'. I was 18  but didn't go against his wishes for fear of being thought a certain type of girl.
Caronc - The corned beef pie was gorgeous both last night and tonight and I'll gladly send you some along
Faraway - Hope you enjoyed your cheese sarnie again today. Sometimes the old faithful things we eat again and again are just right anyway.
PN - I have laughed at your chorizo man and have cheered to myself as well. I have a pet peeve about food being served on things that aren't plates, such as slates, boards, shovels etc and am forever banging on about it to my children. They are, of course, enchanted with this trendy way of serving food and drink and have duly bought various ridiculous receptacles to eat and/or drink from. My youngest thankfully is a penniless student like his Mum so hasn't yet succumbed. The other two, who have their own places, alas have done.
There is a bit of Manchester called the Northern Quarter which is achingly hip and trendy and all the bars/restaurants serve food and drink in things like jam jars and shiny metal shovels and trowels. I have been banned from saying to the kids 'How very Northern Quarter of you' even though it amuses me no end :silenced:
Anyhoo I didn't eat anything for breakfast or lunch as I just wasn't hungry but polished off my 2nd go of pie with beans and tomato sauce for tea followed by an orange.0 -
I have gathered from reading this thread that the small tins of beans and tomatoes etc are expensive in comparison to the average sized ones. Is there anything that is aimed at single people do you think or that is cheaper to buy a smaller version of? It's just got me thinking0

Good evening everyone,
PN - I do admire your dedication in clearing your freezer you would faint if you saw the state of mine......
Farway - yes I think it is the drain which is unfortunately under my deck so while there is a hatch it is beyond me to get at it. It may disperse if it blinking well would stay dry for a bit. Where I live is reclaimed land (though reclaimed a couple of hundred years ago) from a salt marsh so the water table is pretty high put it this way even the pubs in town don't have cellars
) so wet weather tends to play havoc on old drains ... I must point my son in the direction of M&S this weekend as that's a great deal and would suit him to a "t".
Holly - glad your trolley outing was a success what a huge saving
Meg - shame about your beans. I grow mine indoors until they are a good size it's a pain but seems to stop them getting munched.
Rip Off Britain - I'll save that for if I'm in the need to shout at something
SG- glad your pie was good I'll pm you my address and wait for the courier. :cool:I can't think of anything that is cheaper to buy as a single. I refuse to buy small tins of things, I either have them a couple of times or freeze the other portion from a big tin.
I managed a fairly productive day in the garden that most of the flowers now out apart from some lavender and heuchera for a bed at the front and some bedding plants for a bed my son is putting together for me at the weekend out the back. I also planted some chard seeds and more radishes. I'm done now so just as well it's due to rain tomorrow as I will need a fairly static day.
My lunch of LOs with a couple of poached duck eggs was tasty so didn't feel it was a chore to have rice again. That said I'm looking forward to spuds tonight. I was going to have pasta tomorrow but my son who is home this weekend as requested "Mum's special broccoli & pasta bake" - I've no idea what is so special about it and it is never quite the same twice but not a hard request to meet. I'll see what I fancy /what needs using up tomorrow.0 -

Super glue is your friend... buy a suitable pouch and stick it inside - literally. This way you can customise your trolley to meet your exacting standards.

The pattern is very similar to this one:

Ooh, I like that pattern a lot....PasturesNew wrote: »Nice one! Loads of pockets/secure areas then. Mine has none of that. It's a single bag with a draw string.
I think we might be experiencing 'trolley envy'.

Just wanted to share a new 'gadget' that I think is ideally suited to CFO
. I use it to make up my VeganEgg from dry powder which can go really clumpy if not mixed properly. The small quantities are hard to use with a hand whisk but this beaker works really well and is easy to clean.

Just thought it might be useful if you like combining powder and liquid like powdered milk or similar.:hello:0 -

It's another thing about living alone - everything is down to you. Nobody else will help, nobody else will do it. Ergo, if something HAS to be done, then you have to knuckle down and go through the pain of whatever it is .... or live with the consequences of not doing it.
It is therefore something I HAVE to do, I can't ignore it .... it'd just get icier and icier until even the door wouldn't open. And it has to be done NOW as the inside roof ice is now partially preventing the drawer opening.
The only alternative would be to buy a new one
But that doesn't work as I'd still need to find a way of disposing of the old one - which can't be done without defrosting it
It'll be good to have it fresh and empty again! I can fill it full of joy instead of dull frozen veggies this time0 -

You are absolutely right PN...if you don't do it, no burger else will and that applies across the board for those on their own!
Ok so I am officially fed up of CFO or not CFO at all because I'm fed up of it
I want to eat nice, tasty, healthy food but the effort outweighs the enjoyment atm. Even making a sandwich seems a chore to me just now.
More times than ever I open the fridge look inside, it's nearly empty, uninspiring and there's nothing I 'fancy': rinse and repeat in the freezer and cupboards..so I go sit back down again instead. And even more infuriating is that I still can't shed any of my excess weight
Oh the joys'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -

They decided it was because with a couple the other one's around to nag people into going to see the Dr about odd things/pains/whatever.
Then the man on the sofa mentioned being nagged to put the bins out - seeking the sympathy vote and in a "sorry for us poor people" manner.
I just thought to myself "Single people ALWAYS do the bins WITHOUT being nagged"0 -

Me too. I had a plan this morning.... chicken/yorkshires/stuffing/veggies... even defrosted the chicken.
Then simply didn't fancy it .... trouble is, this chicken's got a bit of history so now I've not cooked it I WILL have to bin it... and I don't care enough to cry about the waste (25p).
I opened the freezer and to my deep joy I spotted the two cheap scones I'd tossed in to freeze! So I had those, with the last ¼ teaspoon of old orange marmalade* that had been lurking in the fridge, so that's gone too.
I can't decide yet if I'm still hungry, or not.
* Probably only a singlie would keep a whole marmalade jar for about 5 months when it only contained ¼ teaspoon .... but that's a single portion sometimes!0
