Support for Mortgage Interest

I have recently been made redundant and at 57 after 30 years it seems I cannot get another job but not for want of trying.
Because I have my own home which I have been paying a mortgage on for the past 15 years I am unable to get any help with my mortgage for 39 weeks from the date I claimed which is utterly ridiculous.
That’s nearly a year and I will not get it backdated which will leave me in arrears of over £7500. By this time my house will be repossessed if I don’t find employment.
If I was living in a rented house I would get my rent paid immediately and my council tax. So at least I would have a roof over my head.
This is a sorry state of affairs when those who have worked and paid there taxes for over 30 years cannot get help.
It needs the government to look at helping those of us who are in great need at such critical times in our lives.
I would like to start a petition to the government to help not only myself but others who are in the same situation
Can anyone help

the 39 weeks wait is a fairly recent thing. until last year the waiting period was 13 weeks.

the help is now time limited to 2 years now whereas before there was no limit.

the idea behind it is that the government did not want to buy peoples houses for them ( long term benefit claimants) and i think assume that because you have an asset that can be realised ( unlike renters) you have the option to see and move into rented property

but who wants to go into a rented property when they have paid into the mortgage for so long why should we not be entitled to some help even if is in the short term

If you can't get a job, then how will you ever pay your mortgage off? You will only delay the inevitable.

The expectation is that home owners have insurance to cover them for redundancy or if relying on the government to help, that the redundancy payment will see them through until they can get another job.

Otherwise, selling will ever be the only solution. I do hope you can find a job very soon. Don't underestimate your worth because of your age.

However the sick and disabled still get a free house as there is no limit, A charge should be made on the house to get the money back with interest.

Which is happening, starting with one benefit from April 18. I have been involved in the project

    i agree.
making a charge against the property would be a good move.
it would enable people to receive the help they need, for as long as they need it.

i dont agree with an interest charge though.

in order to have obtained a mortgage, people would have had to prove that they could afford the repayments.

its unfortunate that people lose hobs or become ill/disabled.

    it isn't a lifestyle choice

no one would expect that you would WANT to, but circumstances determine what you can and can't afford to do.
