Converting euros to sterling/dollars

Hi all,
I have about 1000 euros in notes that I don't need (we got married in Ibiza and exchanged lots of money pre-Brexit in case the pound crashed!).
I want to exchange this for either sterling or USD, as we're off to Texas for 3 months in April.
I'm struggling to work out whether it's best to exchange it for sterling somewhere in the UK (I don't have a currency buy-back guarantee), exchange for dollars in the UK (if that's even possible), or to take the euros to Texas and exchange them for dollars there.
Does anyone have any advice around which method would be best?
Thank you!
Toria

Personally, I would sell the Euros to someone at work at the spot exchange rate, then pay the money into my account and use a fee-free card while in Texas.

However, if that's not an option for you, you would probably be better off taking the Euros to Texas to exchange. You won't be able to exchange directly from EUR to USD in this country - you'll end up paying exchange costs twice.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

That's really helpful - thank you! I'll ask around and see if anyone wants some euros at a very slightly discounted rate, and will just take them with us if not :)

    Thanks!

You can use the mid-market rate at the time of exchange, found on xe.com, to have the perfect rate for both of you.

Umm.... I have never been to Texas, but in most of the USA it is not very easy to exchange foreign currency, nor to find decent rates. So I think that you should aim to exchange for sterling here; bank the proceeds; and use them to fund a good fee-free card for use in the USA. Best option, of course, is to exchange with a friend but even if you can't find anyone there are various services that would help: search this site for details.

Don't suppose most americans have ever heard of Euros ;)

Get them changed here - my friend in Swindon will buy them off you.

  • Hi it's not quite the same thing- I am new to the site- but I have a reasonable chunk of USDs in cash I want to swap for pounds. The banks here apply a ridiculous exchange rate to cash transfers, way lower than the bank account to bank account exchange rate on sites like e-e.com. Does anyone have any ideas on the best place to exchange the cash in the UK/best rate or another method of doing it? Thanks JD cash

Ideally find someone who needs dollars, otherwise use the tool:
