  • Thanks all.

Of course we are capable of updating the site. I just want recommendations for good companies who won't make a meal out of us regularly updating the content.

    Thanks all for your input.

The only issues i have had with updating websites are the free hosts. Some will want to inspect your content before it goes live.

Utterly useless when you upload it and have to wait "upto" 24 hours which turned out to be "upto" 4 days sometimes.
You upload the site and then spot a typo but it wont let you update it until the last ones been inspected.

If your paying then that wont be an issue.

With my plan i can host upto 10 of my own domains, but when i just want a quick cheap free one i get a 50webs subdomain. anythingandsomething.50webs.com for example. I get 200 of those included if i wish.
No extra cost, and ideal if you are experimenting and unsure what domain to actually buy.

As was said earlier, there are loads of good hosting companies. I've used Pickaweb for years. Costs me £66 a year, easy to update your site by FTP or file transfer on their site, 50GB a month bandwidth, help is UK based. You can upgrade from the basic package if you need higher bandwidth.

When you move to your new host, put a redirect on your old site. A 301 if your old hoster allows it. If not, on each page of the old site put a <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; to redirect each old page to its new URL. Google's index will show your new site in search results after a couple of weeks. (Some people will tell you this kind of redirect doesn't work, but I've just done in on a couple of sites where I couldn't put a 301, and it did work just fine.) EDIT: of course, transferring your existing domain name would be even better if you can do that.
  • Avoid Heart Internet and 123-reg like the plague.

I've used Best Web Hosting for the last year, from £2.50 per month. But also look at some of the smaller local hosting providers that charge a similar price, there service is usally pretty good as its an SME.

I'm with Vidahost but that's mainly because they took over my old hosting company. They're part of the Paragon Internet group but, if I was in your shoes, I would go for TSOHost who are also part of the Paragon group but offer cheaper packages than Vidahost.

I think you're confusing things. Web hosting is literally just space on a special hard disk where your files are stored. Some web hosts offer extras like templates, pre-installed ecommerce or forum software etc. which you can use yourself to make a website. If you want someone to do something for you, then you want a web designer/developer. Sometimes they'll also provide the hosting but you can choose your own too.

If you have existing files that you can edit yourself e.g. you have software on your computer for editing and you just want the place to upload the files then any webhost with a reasonable reputation will work you just need to think about how much space and how many visitors you'll expect to receive.

If you want something that will give you templates to create a website and upload images to build a page - try looking at somewhere that offers wordpress hosting - that's one of the most popular and easy to use online website builders.

We can probably design the site ourselves. The only thing we would NEED is the facility to be able to update the site a few times per year.
I don't think anyone is confusing things. They've read what the OP said they actually wanted: hosting. Not web design. Hosting.

Well, not quite true. There is one person who's confusing things ;)

I have and from their description I would say what they are looking for isn't web hosting (or not only web hosting). Every host offers the ability to 'update' files - it's called FTP where you upload a file you've previously created on your computer. It's just like moving a file from one folder on your computer to another. That's what hosting is just a hard disk you store files on - you don't create anything there.

What it sounds like the OP might want is a website builder or content management system that will let them "design our site" and manage the content themselves online. Some web hosts offer this as an extra service. If that is what they want then the choice of host is narrower as you need one that offers a good builder option.

You can also install your own content management system (website builder) on any host. And that would be my recommendation as then you aren't tied to a specific host. If they put their prices up, have terrible service or go bust you can easily move somewhere else. The most popular option for this would be to use Wordpress. It's a bit of software which you install on your chosen hosting and provides and online editor/website builder. It's very popular so some hosts will have it preinstalled or you can hire a developer cheaply to do the install for you. It has lots of plugins for different gallery options, optimising for search engines etc. This would be an easy way for a professional looking site that was flexible and easy to manage for someone that can work a word processor. I've set it up for several small businesses and they get on well with it. It's a free download here: https://wordpress.org/

    I hope that helps
