Please suggest a Web host for a site with lots of images. Go Daddy? etc?

Hello everyone

My first post here so please take it easy on me.

I work for a building company. My boss is not very good with technology etc. My boss yesterday had an Email from the company who host his web site telling him the direction of the web hosting company is changing and they are no longer providing stand alone web site hosting. They have told my boss that he must now upgrade to another package that includes all sorts of extras such as shopping carts etc, multiple Email addresses etc. The price has almost tripled! However, my boss simply doesn't want to upgrade. He simply wants to host his company website and be able to update it with new images as and when he wants. He is very frustrated because a few years ago he got involved with a company who agreed to write/design and host his website for a couple of hundred quid. That seemed a bargain at the time, but the downside to this was that my boss couldn't alter the content of the site himself. He had to Email the company requesting them to update/edit and remove content on the site and... you've guessed it...there was a charge every time he wanted to edit, add or remove something from his own website. In the end he paid the company off and changed to the company he is with now and they have hosted the site for ages with no problems. It now seems that the company he is with at this moment have realised that because we here in the office are perfectly capable of editing/adding/removing stuff from the site ourselves then there is no extra cash to be made from us so they have forced him to upgrade his package. Basically he doesn't want to upgrade.

Please can anybody suggest a web host that is simple to use to design our site and has the following qualities:

We want the site to have about 10 different pages. Each page must be able to display about 30 images of recent projects. This can by way of either displaying all 30 on the page and they expand when you click them or...a gallery that you flick through. He has no requirement for any shopping carts or interactive services. All images will be still images. The site is simply a basic site displaying a couple of hundred different pictures and lots of text spread over 10 pages.

For example, let's say it was a car dealer website. You would go to the site and at the home page it would have 10 tabs at the top. Ford, Vauxhall, Mazda, VW, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Merecedes, BMW, Porsche. If you were to click the Ford tab you would be taken to the Ford page where you would see loads of different Ford Cars to choose from...Escort, Fiesta, Focus, Cortina, Granada etc, etc. By clicking on any of the cars the picture would expand. Or... another example would be that when you got to the Ford page there was a gallery option where you would scroll through the album and each page a new Ford model was displayed.

I know people might say for me to go out and research which is the best host but rather than dive in and find out that the site we picked doesn't have an option to show multiple pictures or that its a nightmare to edit/update/add/remove text or images I would be grateful if somebody could suggest a suitable web host.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi

I would not recommend GoDaddy as the editing is really a 3rd party affair.

I would recommend Namesco as a host, primarily because they're British, and I've had good service from them in the past, but as far as I know, they don't offer the custom editing/design service that your boss seems to want.
  • We can probably design the site ourselves. The only thing we would NEED is the facility to be able to update the site a few times per year.

Do you not have the source of the existing site? Why are you wanting to redesign it? Web hosts are 10 a penny and you'll likely get as many recommendations as replies.

If you can design the site, surely you can update it?

I use easily for my domain names and 50webs for my hosting.

But im lazy and have no idea how their prices compare (oops, shouldn't say that on here).

My sites work and use one just for hosting random pictures for forums and it gets a surprising amount of visitors. Also good to see where they clicked the link to get to my site/picture.

  • I use easyhosting.co.uk

Lots of space and good value too.

Just stay away from GoDaddy, they are the worst company for adding hidden extras that others give you free.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !
