Balance transfer wrong number HSBC

Hi I was wondering if anyone could give some advice. I have looked for a thread on this but I can only find ones relating to bank transfers.
I recently got a 0% credit card from HSBC. I went into my local branch on the 28th of December to make 6 balance transfers (totaling around £5,300) from other cards onto my HSBC card. I was told that it would take 5 working days for them to go through, so with it being around the holiday period I assumed that could take a few days longer.
So after a few days 2 of the balance transfers had gone through, but 4 had not. I went in to my local branch again and was assured that everything was fine and some just take longer than others.
Eventually I started to worry and called their customer services department and asked them to double check the numbers on the cards that had not gone through. All of them were wrong.
The balance transfer to 1 of the cards was transferred back immediately, but the other 3 were not. I have been given varying bits of information about how long this will take, ranging from 10 days to 20 days to 8 weeks!
Added to that they have said that I might not get my money back!
I am aware that if this was a bank transfer, and I had made the mistake, I might never see the money again. But this wasn't my mistake. It was the branch staff at HSBC.
So my question is this - will I get the money back on to my card?
Thanks

Why on earth did you go into a bank branch to do a balance transfer?

    1. Please specify all 6 credit cards you were paying and the amounts please.

    2. Please specifiy which ones have gone through / which ones failed etc?

    3. What is the credit limit of your HSBC card?

    4. How exactly did the HSBC staff member do these balance transfers for you? I'm curious.

  • I went into the branch because they had sent the card to the wrong address, and I needed to do the transfers before the period where I got the 0% ran out. I was told to go into the branch with my passport so that they could do the transfer by the customer services department.

    The cards were -

Barclaycard - £700 (This one has been reversed)

Vanquis - £400 (This one completed successfully)

Vanquis (My partner's card) - £2,500 (Wrong number)

Think Money - £400 (Wrong number)

Capital One - £900 (Wrong number)

    Luma - £400 (Completed successfully)

    My credit limit is £5,500

The staff member took my cards, and a list of the amounts I wanted to transfer and processed it on their computer system.

Most card companies only allow 90% or 95% of the credit limit to be used up for balance transfers, this is to allow for the fees.

    So if your credit limit was £5,500, 90% = £4,950. 95% = £5,225.

Your totals you wanted transferred = £5,300. No wonder some of them failed.

Did they give you a reason why the Barclaycard one was reversed? Is that card in your name?

The Think Money and Cap One cards, by wrong number, do they mean an incorrect digit was entered? If yes, then you need to chase HSBC for compensation as it was their staff member's error that led to it. If it's a wrong card number, chances are the payment will be sitting in a holding account and should be returned soon.

The Vanquis one, are you sure it would go through being that it's in your partner's name? Some lenders won't allow transfers if it's not in cardholder's name, other lenders don't care.

  • There was no problem with the amount being transferred, or being transferred to my partner (all of this was asked and checked in the branch).

All 4 that failed did so because the wrong number was entered (incorrect digits). The Barclaycard was also a wrong number. When I made them aware that the wrong digits had been entered they tried to reverse all of the balance transfers. Barclaycard was the only one that was successful.

I have called customer services a number of times but nobody will tell me why the rest haven't been reversed like the Barclaycard one. They just say that they don't know and it could take 8 weeks for me to find out.

Do you know why Barclaycard would be immediately reversed but the others were unable to?

I am worried that they have went to another account and been spent.
  • And the balances are all showing on my HSBC card (except Barclaycard that was reversed) so they all went through at HSBC's end (No problem with percentages or partners name on the card).
  • To clarify -

    - All 6 balance transfer amounts left my HSBC credit card account. My balance on the HSBC card after this was around £5,370

    - 2 of the 6 had the digits entered correctly, and made it to the correct accounts

    - 4 of them had incorrect digits entered. The balance transfers amounts were debited to my HSBC card.

    - Barclaycard reversed the payment immediately.

    - None of the other amounts have been reversed, and are still showing on my HSBC card balance.

A member of the bank's staff did the transfers, keying in the account numbers from the cards you handed them?

If so, the mistake is entirely theirs. They should sort it out and pay you compensation for the additional interest you've paid on the cards you transferred from.

Jeez, what a mess. How can a member of staff at a branch of a high street bank get something as simple as this wrong? I would be fuming, and down at the branch giving the member of staff some grief.
Probably not constructive advice, but :mad::mad::mad:
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.
