12 Hour Delay with Emirates

Hello,
In December I was on my way back from Thailand with my Girlfriend. We were flying with Emirates and had a connecting flight in Dubai. Our first flight from Phuket to Dubai was delayed by over an hour, which concerned us as we only had an hour and a half anyway to reach our connecting flight, but were assured by staff that the connecting flight would wait. However we got to Dubai and was informed we had missed the connecting flight and have to get on another flight which wasn't for 12 hours. So instead of our flight home being at 14.20pm, it was at 2.20am!
We were informed we could leave the airport, but we would not be allowed any baggage and they would put us in their dedicated 'emirates delayed connection hotel'. (This hotel was horrible, dirty and smelt like wee)
We ended up landing back in the UK around 13 hours after we were ment to, which resulted in my girlfriend missing work and I missed Uni, and missed my exam.
I don't think that this flight is covered under EU law as it departed Dubai and was with Emirates which are a UAE airline.
We have contacted Emirates who have said they are unable to give us any financial compensation but will give us air miles
Just wondering if anyone had done anything like this before and had any luck, or had any help for me?
Thanks in advance

You are right no compensation due. Take the Airmiles.0

M'colleague Justice is correct of course. I don't think Emirates were ever going to hold a flight of hundreds of people for a connecting flight and it's naughty that they said this. You were taking a risk landing back in the UK just before an exam - I trust you have informed the Uni authorities that this was out of your control.
Where you may just get somewhere is to complain as high up the Emirates management chain as you can find about the hotel. Detail precise shortcomings and perhaps find some helpful negative reviews. You are saying essentially they 'failed' in their duty of care. You never know your luck!0
