Car Finance and Dead Car

DPFs can't cause an engine failure. They don't run on oil, they don't run on fuel. If it has got oil in it its because the oil came from the engine throwing it out the exhaust, there is no other possible way that it could get in there. The engine threw the oil out because it was knackered. The DPF has been killed by the engine dying, not the other way around.
Paying a motor engineer (not a mechanic) for a report, finding a good solicitor to send a "fix this under the warranty you paid for and stop trying to fob my client off with bull manure" letter would be a good course of action.
A DPF blockage which causes excess exhaust back pressure can cause a seal failure in the turbocharger which can, in turn, cause the car to vacuum up its own lubricating oil and burn that instead of fuel. That type of diesel runaway is not unheard of (I've witnessed it myself in a local garage when they forced a regeneration on a Focus 1.6TDCi which led to a complete engine seizure) and absolutely will result in a full engine rebuild/replacement scenario as the OP describes.
Worth also noting that failed active regenerations can cause oil level to rise and dilute with diesel which can again precipitate runaway via the breathers.0 -

One mode of failure is that the oil level can increase during DPF active regen when the additional fuel injected to heat the DPF leaks past the piston rings and goes into the oil sump. Eventually the oil level gets so high it gets sucked through the breather and then the engine revs itself to destruction. This is a particular mode of failure on Mazda cars and they try to get out of it because the manual calls for an oil level check every time the fuel tank is filled. No doubt this issue happens on other cars too.0 -
tbh, more than anything now the warranty is least of my issues.I know their trying to get out of it, and Ill fight to at least have the warranty cost refunded to me as they have defintely mis sold it.. but in the meantime ..... I just dont know where i Stand with the finance...........
The car is Kaput and not worth the bottom line of over 4000 of engine repairs. I have Tax and MOT due and the dealership basically want the car shifting within the next 14 days or so otherwise they charge.
Ive accepted the car is gone, and for me the garage can keep the thing.... but I dont actually know where I stand legally............I need a car for work. I can cope if they say you need to pay the payments owed upfront until halfway and then you can volunatry terminate.its just becomming too much not actually knowing where I stand.......0 -
You won't just be able to VT on a car that is broken as it must be in a reasonable condition. If you do VT in the current state you will be liable for the repairs anyway.
What have the finance company said?0 -

When you VT you must return the car in good condition, so if you try to VT they will bill you for an engine.
Why not put a second hand engine in? Cant be more than £500 for one and at worst a day each way to fit.0 -
Quote for a recondition engine I was getting around £950, but its then getting the car to the place where it would be done , cost of labour and Ive not seen any engines close to where I live.
I would guess as well the DPF will need doing and they have stated there is also an issue with the exahust resulting from the faulty DPF,and possibly other unforseen issues............
still awaiting finance to come back properly.......should be getting a call tommorow about it
I jsut wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation0 -

Reconditioned engines rarely are - they're just cleaned up a bit and resold.
Look for an engine fresh out of a car in a breakers yard and with warranted miles. Try ebay or some of the big breakers.
Any decent mechanic should be able to fit it.
Otherwise you're in to the realms of spares or repair on ebay or gumtree BUT you would need to have the buyer clear the finance upon sale and you make up the difference.0 -
What car is it0

Is it a Mazda 6?
Standard self destruction sequence if what we read is true, apparently repeated failed regens, sump overfills with excess fuel due to the above, if the engine doesn't consume its own sump fuel concoction the bearings wear out due to lack of lube.
Modern DPF equipped Diesels of all makes need to be well researched before purchase and constantly carefully monitored for oil level increases as well as impeccably serviced above and beyond what the maker says, getting to be barge pole jobs for so many low to average mileage/use buyers who for some reason keep buying the things.0 -

I was wondering if it was a Mazda diesel as well although the OP seems to have avoided answering what car it is for some reason.
