First car for daughter

Options
17yr old daughter currently learning to drive, she's 18 in a couple of weeks and we were thinking of getting her a cheap first car (£500) as we can't get her insured on either of our cars and she has to start somewhere right?

Was thinking of a 1.25 fiesta, 1.2 clio, basic models I looked at insurance quotes a couple of months back based on if she had passed her test and these were coming out around £1200pa, doable, but now we're looking for something for her, everything I'm putting into the comparison sites is coming up at £2k cheapest, I know this age group is high risk, but £2k is just totally unaffordable on a £500 basic car, bearing in mind potential maintenance etc.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on which make and model of car I can look at which could come up cheaper than this?

    Our daughter has a Ka.

At age 19 her car insurance with Direct Line for provisional licence
was around £600 with a telematics box fitted and both parents as named drivers.

It is guaranteed not to increase if she passes her test before the renewal date.

This is something you have to watch as some quotes come up cheap but then jump up when they pass their test and they will not tell you what it will go up to beforehand.

I'm in a similar situation with my lad. He's just passed his test, and has got a 1 litre Toyota Yaris, 2005 plate. I'm just in the process of getting quotes for him, it's looking like roughly £1500 a year - for a "hairdryer", as he puts it !

I think I'm right in saying - as a general rule, less than 1.2 litre is best for a learner/new driver in terms of insurance. Bigger than that, forget it.

Add yourself and spouse as named drivers, this will usually help ( assuming you've got clean licences ). Doesn't matter if you actually drive the car, having you on the policy will usually help.

But for now, get quotes based on her being a learner ( if that's what she is ). By definition, she's going to be supervised at all times, so insurance quotes will be lower. It's when she passes her test that the premiums will rocket.

    Try a multicar policy
Your own car + daughters car BUT make sure her car has her as main driver you and anybody else as named driver

only way we could get insurance for our daughter at a reasonable price

It cost my 19 year old son £400 LESS to insure a MK3 2 litre Ford Mondeo Estate than it did to insure his 1.25L Fiesta. Those Fiestas, like Corsas etc, are bought and ragged around by young uns and as a result end up in a lot of accidents so are seen as a high risk car. A 2L Ford Mondeo Estate is a grandad car and not likely to be raced about so is seen as being a lower risk,

Contrary to popular belief "small car with small engine" doesn't always equal cheapest insurance.

1.1 Saxo when my 1st Daughter passed, 1.3 Ford KA for second daughter. Better off buying them the car and letting them pay for insurance. That way they will have to be careful, any accidents or points and the insurance will be prohibitive.

Alot of people when getting their first car always seem to go for the 1.1 or 1.0 litre versions assuming it's cheapest when in reality it's not because that's what most of the young drivers will be in.

For example I know that a 1.4 Peugeot 106 Special Edition is cheaper to insure for a new driver than a 1.1.

I've seen a couple buying a first car in a second hand car garage and they wouldn't even consider anything above a 1.0 litre engine because they were expensive enough to insure. But it turned out they hadn't even considered getting a quote for a car with a bigger engine assuming it would be too high.
