Gift card refunded first instead of money

Hi, I hope someone can help. I ordered 7 items from Dorothy perkins online and paid with a twenty pound gift card and the rest through PayPal . Four items didn't fit so I returned them and kept the other three. I have just received my refund for the returned items and it is twenty pounds short, as they have refunded the gift card first before refunding me any money. I have now thrown the gift card away as i thought it had been spent.
Does anyone know if i have any rights to say that I want the money and not the gift card refunded? I have now spent all my own money on what was supposed to be a Christmas present and am stuck with a money on a gift card that i no longer have or want! Thanks.

They get to choose the refund method and almost every retailer would do the same, always refund the gift voucher first. The gift voucher may be available in your online account or contact them to see if they can issue a replacement.0

Have you read Dorothy Perkins FAQs?
In there, under the heading 'Gift Cards - Mainland UK and ROI Only' you will see:How will I be refunded if I have paid with a Gift Card and another method of payment?
The Gift Card will be credited first, with any remaining balance being credited to the other method of payment used at the time of purchase. What happens if I have received a refund and I no longer have the Gift Card that I used to place the order?
The refund would automatically be credited to this card. Please contact our Customer Care Team for further help.0 -

I returned an item to Amazon recently and I had bought 2 items together and paid with a gift card plus debit card. When I returned one item due to it being faulty they actually fully refunded the debit card and some of the gift card!. Which was actually more inconvenient for me because I had to buy another one.0 -
Thanks everyone looks like i just bought my own Christmas present then! Won't fall for that again!0

Have you contacted them about it? They should be able to cancel the gift card you've thrown away and send you a new one. It'll still be a gift card rather than cash but at least it's not wasted.0

Yes thanks, i did read that i will be able to get the gift card back, but what I meant I is that, I have already bought the only things i wanted, and now am stuck with a gift card that i don't want. Thought I might have some rights to say I didn't want the gift card refunded, thanks for all your replies, I will be more mindful of this in future.1

After 3 days i finally got an email back saying they will send me a new gift card out but only for £15, when it should be 20. Is this right that they can just take £5 off for postage /admin etc?0
