PAC code
I have seen a sim only offer that interests me but my contract has a few months to run. Instead of buying out my contract can I run it down and then get a pac code to transfer my number across and replace a number that would have been in use for say 4 months. If I grab the deal on offer

Yes.
Although "run it down" really means carry on using it for a few months and paying in full.
At the end of contract, ask for PAC. At which point they MAY give you a really good offer to stay!!
What are the 2 companies involved ?0 -
Unless that's a really, really good sim only deal it'll be cheaper waiting until your present deal runs down. There may well be better deals by then anyway.0

Present deal is unlimited min and txt with 16gb with EE for £16.99, been offered 2500 mins unlimited txt and 4gb for £5. the minutes and data would be ok if only virgin allowed you to tether, so it looks like hold out and see what EE offer when I ask for a PAC.
I know Virgin run on a reduced speed data wise compared to EE but it would not be a problem for me0
