You've got 2 options, the easy option is to accept it back and refund the £20. The slightly complicated option would be to let paypal make the decision..it could actually go either way whether they decide for you or for the buyer. If they decide for the buyer then the buyer will still have to return the cot, but you could argue that you want it posted as you are not available to accept it back in person. The cost of returning it may make the buyer decide to keep it after all.

I feel sorry for you, I like to think people like this always get their cumuppance in the end!
Hope it all goes well for you!
  • I have bought many items on ebay that are not as described.

Bought an mp3 player that was sold as new and very good condition but when it arrived it was incredibly scratched up.

The seller purposely took photos in such a way that none of the marks showed up. Pictures taken from a distance, very little light etc.

I never buy a second hand item that has a library picture as you can never tell how bad condition the item will be.

Your buyer on the other hand came round and collected the item, yet he did not see it fit to check it out beforehand? I thought the purpose of collecting was not only to save on postage but to also give it a spot check.

Did you make sure you took a photo of all the bad points on the cot plus mention them in the auction?

The fact that you have offered them a refund should keep you in the clear with any paypal dispute, hopefully they do not get difficult and insist you collect it back. It should be down to them to return it to you first.
  • Hi, thanks loads for all the replies and suggestions. They returned the cot this morning.

Have put it up and found there was a crack on one of outside corners of the cot, not on the inside. Two things, 1 - its not dangerous to use, the crack is not large or in a stress bearing location 2 - the crack wasn't there when we took the pictures. I wonder if they bashed it taking it home and decided to return it for that. But we'll never know.

There is a tiny hole in the netting right at the top of one side. If it was there when we sold it it went unnoticed by us. Again, I don't think it could be described as dangerous or not as described as we never said the item was in pristine condition.

We have refunded the £20 paypal payment (advising the buyer the refund would only go through paypal, I didn't give him a choice, thanks for the advice!) and learnt some lessons.

1 Cash only for collected items.
2 List every imperfection with any item we sell no matter how superficial.

As one person said, at least the dispute didn't suggest they hadn't received the cot.

I'd rather have given them the refund than dragged it all out, I might have won, I might not but the hassle with 5 weeks of OHs pregnancy left wouldn't have been worth it.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Will have to relist the item now but will add photos showing the hole and crack so future buyers are aware, and will specify cash on collection only.

Must just keep reminding ourselves of the 20 or so other things we've sold on ebay that went smooth as anything! (and try not to think of the possible negative feedback they might leave)

The buyer's threatening and unreasonable communications would mean I would have been very tempted to tell them to take a hike, but sometimes it's just easier to shrug your shoulders safe in the knowledge that morons like that will fall out with a lot of people if they continue with that attitude.

You did nothing wrong, but I'd still give them -ve feedbcak for aggressive emails.
