ebay paypal buyer telling lies, is this unusual?

I had a travel cot for sale on ebay:

The buyer used buy it now to get it for £20. they paid through paypal.
They collected it today, by knocking on the door, saying "travel cot", taking it from my partner, getting back into their car and driving off, polite i know.
They have just sent me this email:

"We collected the cot this aft like we said and finally have got home to check it out and well i am not happy at all about it its very grubby there is a hole in the netting and a crack in one of the plastic corner pieces which u can imagine was not put in ur description of the cot and also it is unsafe to put a child in with the crack, so we would like our £20 back and we will drop the cot round and bit of advice i would not sell a cot that is unsafe and grubby like it is now i can see why u bought a new one for your baby and sold this one, if u are not willing to give our money back then i will go through ebay to claim it back and get my transaction cancelled!! so please email me asap as we want to drop this off tomorrow as we are going to spend the £10 more and buy a brand new one which i wish we had done so in the first place!!

Leaving aside the fact that they need to learn it's ok to use full stops from time to time, I wondered if this sounds odd?
Their paypal dispute they opened said:
[/FONT]"TRAVEL COT DESCRIBED AS HARDLY USED ITS VERY GRUBBY AND CRACKED CORNER PLASTIC PIECE AND HOLE IN NETTING SO WANT A REFUND AND TO RETURN COT!!"
Again, lets ignore the fact they seem to have misplaced the capslock button along with the full stop.
I replied with an email:
[FONT=Arial, Verdana]If you are not happy you are welcome to return the item and I will refund your payment through paypal. I will be available tomorrow morning and afternoon until 3pm.
and for the paypal dispute I said:
[/FONT] "The cot is not described as hardly used. It's described at "used occasionally for grandchildren". It's neither grubby, nor cracked nor containing holes, evidenced in the photos of the item. The buyer is welcome to return the cot for a paypal refund."
What I want to know is, is this a common problem on ebay?
I accurately described the item and put up 4 photos, along with giving them the opportunity to see the cot put up and taken down at the house before they left. They seemed happy to just take it.
Now they are lying and saying its in awful condition and dangerous.
I chose not to get into a slanging match with them over it though, not worth the hassle or negative feedback.

Why didn't they do that in the first place. And why would anyone expect a shining brand new pristine travel cot for £20 when it cost £95 originally? They have babies in, of course they won't be in pristine condition!

You get some in all walks of life I'm afraid.
For the future it's never a good idea to take paypal for a collect in person, they can easily file a "item not received" dispute and you have no proof you have sent/given it to them.
Re-list it I'm sure someome will want to buy it and wont expect show room condition.0 -
You always get some bad apples on ebay, have you tried your local paper, most do free adds,
if you relist on ebay, there is bound to be someone else who will be grateful of a bargain.xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
The problem is the person could return it to you with damage to it :mad:
As above in future avoid accepting paypal for collection only items
Oh and when the person comes back round to return it DO NOT give them £20 cash even if they pester you for it. Use the "refund" button in your paypal account.0 -
I think your about to find the faults that they have put there themselves to further the refund. Also expect them even when they get the refund to give you a NEG Feedback.

Yes you do get some - I have one at the moment. It does make you lose faith in nature and I have today - but they are a rarity and you do have to remember that, as the bad experiences do tend to stick in your mind.
I am afraid that they may well damage the item before they return it.0 -

the other thing you can do is state on your paypal dispute that they can send back the travel cot by post at their expense and you will refund the original £20 on recieptGive blood - its free0

Make sure that when the buyer returns the travel cot that it's the same one you sold to them. There is a common scam where someone "buys, swaps and returns" a different item than that sold to them. Usually the buyer already has a damaged item and buys a new/used one in better condition. They then returns their damaged one for a full refund. This really only works with payments received through PayPal as they always side with the buyer; otherwise the buyer has no leverage to force a refund.
If they return a different item, make sure you only refund via PayPal and get sight of their driving licence or photo ID (and make a copy of it). This way you can make a Police report of Fraud by false representation under Section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006, supplying your eBay photos as proof of item substitution resulting in financial loss."Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."0 -
Accepting paypal and allowing the person to collect is a no-no.
Private sales are basically "sold as seen" so its up to the buyer to check it first. You could refuse to accept the item back, BUT, they'll raise a dispute with paypal and should win it.
Check the item for damage before accepting it back. If its damaged refuse to accept it.0 -
The buyer has already opened a SNAD dispute, so it could be worse. At least they're not pretending they didn't get it.My TV is broken!

Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0
