Would going on Holiday for 27 days affect my benefits?

I'm fairly independent in terms of movement but would need to stay in a hotel with a room for disabled, roll in shower and things like that. Care wise if I had a relative who lived abroad or could hire care staff when there (here there's a business model, imaging the savings compared to flying out the carer and getting them a hotel room and their expenses) I could say "oh yes I go abroad and I'm on DLA.
Reality is I'm on standard care with high mobility PIP and I couldn't manage even a few days on my own in a normal hotel room, unless I gave up bathing, wore a nappy and lived off of pre-packaged cold food. Some countries are really difficult in a chair, we loved Switzerland but some parts of the USA have no disabled facilities at all.
May I ask you what parts of the USA you travel to/visit have no disabled facilities at all?
I ask because we, mainly, travel to the USA (Florida, Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego) to name just a few because OF the excellent disabled facilities.
Vegas is by far the best, every bus has a drop down step for wheelchair users, every sidewalk has a disabled lane, they cater very very well for disabled people there so wondered which States don't?
And without a shadow of a doubt every American State we land in the airport staff are by far the best in the world for assistance and actually offering to help without being asked.0 -

Michigan - nightmare place, some of the buses didn't kneel down and it took our friend talking to the driver with her local accent to "remind" one driver that I needed time to get strapped down before he moved off as wheelchairs face forward on their buses.
Ohio - no disabled access to quite a few shops and restaurants, apparently they had "grandfather" rights to not adapt their premises despite the ADA.
Dallas but I'm not sure if that was because I was in a wheelchair or because we were travelling with our friends who are black. The ignorance was astounding, thankfully we were only there for one night as part of a tour. A woman actually took hold of my chair and walked off with me to show me to her husband.0 -
Whilst Dla isn't the problem legitimately receiving higher rate care and mobility and being able to travel for a month entirely alone are almost incompatible - where's the care and mobility help in the equation?
Back to assistance dogs ... one of my colleagues used to walk into the office and rustle his fingers next to my dog's ears, and proclaim 'definitely still a hearing hound!' edit to add the important bit of that anecdote, despite teachign with this chap regularly it took me about 2 years to twig what he was doing!! duh
I swear 90% of the visitors to my office are for the hound
And yet one long standing MSE poster has done exactly this and becomes annoyed when questioned about it.:(0 -
i get DLA. middle rate care and high rate mobility.
ON PAPER i should get high rates for both under PIP. ( yeah, yeah, yeah
)
i an quite capable of travelling abroad on my own, as long as Jazz is with me.
whether it would be in the slightest bit enjoyable, is a different matter.
with my dog i am capable of moving around, i can talk and ask for directions and given time, would learn the layout of a hotel room.
would consider it to be more of a chore than a holiday though!0 -

Words fail me. How did you handie it?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Well i started with politely protesting then when that didn't work she thought my voice was "darling" I reverted to swearing but strong Glasgow accents are not understood by your Texan so I reverted to screaming "I don't know this woman" while passers by stared. Then OH hearing the weegie in distress came running out the shop to see what was going on and I was half a block away with a stranger.
Then the woman's husband appeared and they stood chatting over how unusual I was in this unusual wheelchair and where on earth was I from while I was shouting "Scotland ya lunatic". When OH reached us and explained that I was most upset and that people in wheelchairs don't like being kidnapped no matter how weird they look and that they should really apologise while I was escaping as fast as I could in the other direction.

That is shocking and horrendous treatment :eek:Well i started with politely protesting then when that didn't work she thought my voice was "darling" I reverted to swearing but strong Glasgow accents are not understood by your Texan so I reverted to screaming "I don't know this woman" while passers by stared. No wonder you wouldn't want to go back, i don't blame you. Jesus. Words fail me how anyone would think that was acceptable behavior. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I tried going away for 5 days a few years back and it was a disaster. I should have known me and crowds do not mix. I spent most of my time there in the first aid tenti get DLA. middle rate care and high rate mobility.

No more trips for me. Friend convinced me to go to a one day event last year and again ended up in the first aid tent (who knew an empty packet of cheese and onion crisps could aid me with a panic attack?). I've just accepted i can't go anywhere now.
it not worth the mental distress. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
i could go , but not knowing where i am or how to get anywhere would be a pointless waste of time.xXMessedUpXx wrote: »I tried going away for 5 days a few years back and it was a disaster. I should have known me and crowds do not mix. I spent most of my time there in the first aid tent

I've not worked out why they thought I looked weird, I was just a wheelchair user with a hat.0
