Best Credit Card for USA?

Hi,

Can someone please advise the best UK credit card for spending in the USA?

Is it best to pay for an American Express or is there a cheaper alternative? I have looked on the website but can only see references to Europe spending.

Thanks in advance!

just back took a creation mastercard which refunds the 3% loading on cash and purchases, worked well in the US execpt buying fuel at a pay on the pump and some locations who wouldn't/couldn't let you use a pin others worked well with or without a pin funny really.

Just wander in to the petrol station and prepay for fuel before dispensing.

Halifax clarity or nationwide select,if you have a flexplus account, both worked fine last year when we were in USA for three weeks and visited 5 different states. Yes there petrol stations don't work like ours if you want to use a card you need to pre pay for a certain amount. Not the best if you are wanting to just fill it up and you don't know how much the tank takes.

You can always overpay for the fuel and then get back what you don't spend of course much simpler if paying with cash
  • I think as identified MSE has a good raft of ideas.

I have a Caxton FX multicurrency card which has worked well.

You preload at what seem ok rates and use is free for cash machines or card payment. It supports major currencies in one card.

You always pay the local currency not sterling even if asked.

There is an app to top up via your bank debit card. Easy en route with wifi.

Then if you have any major residual balance you can move it into Sterling or as I did euro for my next trip via their website.

I also take a spare normal card "in case" but never needed it to date.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

Yeh it is a pain when you not carrying much cash and trying to use your card for everything, in 3 weeks only visited one shell station that would allow you to fill up without going in first.
