Scottish Power or Iresa?

The idea of having to pay a company like Iresa any sort of material sum up front would be enough for me to rule them out.0

Exactly what I was thinking, Paying upfront is a bugbear. Scottish Power is now seeing more tempting, hope to get some more views over he next few days before I switch. Found that 8.222p tariff now, the unit rates are quite a bit higher than the one at the top of my comparison so it is obviously more for very low users.0

I had the same choice to make, although I'm not eligible for the warm home discount so SP didn't have that in their favour for me.
I decided to go with Iresa because they worked out £7 a month cheaper for my usage and there is no exit fee meaning I can leave at any time if I want to.
I'm not expecting to find any cheaper tarrifs to switch to, but if E.ON do come out with a better tarrif than v21 (as unlikely as that looks) that can at least match SP, I'd probably switch back for their online service and to regain the smart features on my meters. (Although, once I get access to the Iresa online account I might prefer it, who knows)3.6 kW PV in the Midlands - 9x Sharp 400W black panels - 6x facing SE and 3x facing SW, Solaredge Optimisers and Inverter. 400W Derril Water (one day). Why? All credit balances are now protected by Ofgem following its decision to implement a levy on all energy consumers. All energy is purchased by the suppliers in advance of supply: If paying a month in advance means that the supplied energy is cheaper then it is a win win situation. I suspect that you pay Sky; your mobile provider and insurance in advance so why not energy? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I didn't know that and it changes my view completely. :money:0 -
I totally understand where Hengus is coming from and that is how the "savvy" will come round to thinking.
There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't choose Iresa or any other supplier, for that matter. Ofgem has now set the precedent with the collapse of GB Energy, with the supplier of last resort repaying credit balances and honouring tariffs.
The concern now is it may open the floodgates to many more smaller suppliers with unrealistic business practices, and all of us, as energy consumers, pay the cost in the end.Fred - Where's your get up and go?
Barney - It just got up and went.

I agree 100% and I said as much to Ofgem. They have made it clear in levy discussion documents that they don't want to get involved in any form of financial due diligence as they lack the resources etc to do so. I suggested an ATOL type bond but their view is that would stop new suppliers entering the market.
FWiW, I was reading an old article in the Lancashire Evening Post where the boss of GBEnergy was saying how pleased he was that his business was likely to reach a turnover figure of £100M in 2016. How quickly that turned into a reported £25M debt borne by the Coop and all energy consumers. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. There isn't as much regulation out there as people think to stop new suppliers entering the energy market? As i said before, anyone can register a Limited Company within 24 hours, (15 hours if you pay extra,) no questions asked. You can then proceed to change just about every detail about yourself, except your DOB, which is more difficult.
Have fun playing the game. I don't need to - yet.Fred - Where's your get up and go?

So, I have been fighting with Scottish Power for 10 months as I discovered that they were billing me for an Imperial Gas meter when I actually have a metric meter.
I estimate that they owe me several thousands of pounds , it has been referred to the Ombudsman however they have not followed they instructions set by the Ombudsman and I feel like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall!
They also never reply to any emails apart from generic rubbish!
Has any one else had similar dealings with them? I am currently considering taking it to the small claims court.0
