Consider fumes and smell from big diesel engines as well.

Almost a thing of the past now thankfully, its only the older lorries that might smell a bit when cold.

They won't be cold when presented, and they won't be presented at all if they are chucking out smoke or smell of fumes, or they will fail badly and failing HGV/PSV tests has ongoing consequences for the operator and maintenance provider they do not want.

Smoke and engine noise and smells wont be that much of an issue these days, what maybe more annoying is beep beep beep, or {this vehicle is reversing] [repeat].. For damn ages and ages as a less than confident driver does his slalom reversing test.

Having a truck fail the MOT is always bad news, you dont want your trucks failing the MOT for anything... One too many and VOSA or whatever they are called this week will be down taking your fleet to bits.

I had one guy on a random spot check try to lever the tread off a remoulded tyre. No idea what his problem was but he was quite insistant that it would come off of he used the right tool. I had to say something and another guy took over from him. Sent him off to another vehicle.

New guy just looked and tried pushing it apart and said no problems off you go.

Is that what the big painted floor bit with distance markers will be for? I'm actually going to be slightly annoyed if it is loud, because the sales guy was talking about another site being bad because it had warehouses at the back of it...

There are some areas to avoid if you don't want noise, litter cars parked everywhere blocking your access, don't buy a house near-

    A school
    A hospital
    An industrial estate
    A station
    An airport
    A football ground
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Hah, a salesman's truth switch is hard to find.

The first house i bought backed onto green belt, there's roughly half a mile as the crow flies of estate houses now on that very green belt, and over the other side of the road where the ground has sat they're in the middle of clearing that bit of green belt now.

My favourite is estates called The Meadows, yes indeed once upon a time where these 750 barrck style houses now stand there was a meadow. :(

    Assume the salesman is lying.

The only way to be sure is to actually stand there and watch some tests. I'm sure they'll be happy-ish to let you do so if you go into the reception with a box of celebrations and ask.

Yep a big painted box on the floor, you have to reverse your vehicle and have the rear inside that box. You should not be short or overshoot.

Once I've reserved the plot (fully refundable) I'll ask to go on site and stand at the plot for a while to see what happens. I can also park about 10m up the road and listen from there.

That's a good point, I use to live above a lane that led to a small supply area for shops and each day various trucks would reverse up it slowly with the constant 'Warning! This vehicle..is.....reversing' For all the noise that was around that area (traffic noise, people etc.) it was the reversing noise that was the really annoying one.

A DVSA test centre is probably going to be fairly well-regulated and civilised compared to other "industrial" land uses.

DVSA have been closing down some of their test centres over the past few years, so you might want to check whether there are any plans to close this one, and consider what it might be replaced with.
