My condemed boiler

I bought my flat on 10th August but stupidly didn't get the boiler checked within my 7 days, I had a problem a couple of days ago and now the company has condemed my boiler as immediately in a dangerous situation, he even said there would have been carbon monoxide leaking from it (I may not have woken up one morning, which really scares me). The boiler has never been inspected since it was installed (as there is no sticker on it to say so, and is over 14 yrs old) the guy I bought the flat from let it out but never had a CP12 certificate to say that it was in good working order. Anyway now I have no heating or hot water and I can do nothing about it, so said my lawyer. I can't even claim on my house insurance as the problem was there before I bought the flat.
There are parts missing and a safety cable has been cut also, the engineer can get all the parts but one is obsolete, the part is the front plate (a Myson Economist Boiler) part number 68252306. I also had someone to give me a price for a new boiler as I'm unable to locate that specific part. I was quoted £3117. which I though was really expensive but he offered me a payment plan. This was from Scottish Gas, I know their expensive but I don't know what else to do, I live on my own, have only been in the property for a month and ten days and really have no other option that I can think of.
Can you please give me some advice if you can as I don't want to get ripped off and desperately need the work done as winter is coming v.soon and its cold enough in the mornings as it is.
Do I have a case if I can take the people who sold me the flat to court?? or do I just need to sit back and pay for all of this work and he sits pretty, surely he can't get away with this.
Please please help Martin

As far as the legal side is concerned, I am pretty certain your lawyer is correct. You would have to prove that the previous owner knew it was in a dangerous condition - and that would be almost impossible.
As far as the boiler is concerned, have you tried a local plumber? The big organisations will usually try to sell you a new boiler but it might be repairable and even to replace a boiler should cost nowhere near £3,117.0
