OP, the places like Bearsden and Robroyston are fairly busy with lots of new housing developments. Neither boast the community spirit you desire.
As mentioned in previous post, I know Aberfoyle offers that sort of lifestyle whilst being close to Glasgow or Stirling and 45mins from Helensbrugh.
Spoken like someone who doesn't know either of these areas at all! Aberfoyle's not somewhere I'd consider living, though I do go there probably 20 times a year for my sport and it's lovely, to visit. It's over 30 min drive to a supermarket, local facilities are very sparse, the place is overrun with tourists for a lot of the year and many of the locals aren't 'local'!
Bearsden has a great sense of community. I know many people who are involved in local groups and it's superb.0 -
As above, plus I can only see one property for sale in Aberfoyle and it's a lot more than 5 years old and is £130k over budget.0

OP, you seem very keen on Erskine. Is there a particular reason for this? If I were relocating back to the West, Erskine wouldn't make my top 10.0

GlasgowDan's on the money there. I used to live in Milngavie, and I was a teacher at one of the primary schools in Bearsden. East Dunbartonshire have very high standards for their schools, and were better thought of than West Dunbartonshire. Professionally, I was very impressed by how ED catered for their students as individuals. Outside of teaching, I ran a Brownie group with a friend, and soon found myself invited to loads of other groups. It's really easy to get involved if you want to.
Both towns are fantastic, family friendly places with excellent primary and secondary schools. Very welcoming and safe communities, with a nice mix of local and national shops, easy links to Glasgow and beyond with the train and beautiful countryside ten minutes away. I know there's been a lot of work done in Erskine (I have a good friend who's a town planner for Renfrewshire), but I'd be happier getting started in an established town/village, especially if I didn't know the local area well, because it's likely everything will be in place already.© Cuilean 2005. I don't know enough about the area to be honest. I drive past it all the time but have never stopped. However people I know have mentioned it's not a bad place. So I was interested to know what exactly other people opinion was of the area.0 -
Cardross would be my pick of villages out that way to live in0

There are some lovely new builds on the outskirts of Dumbarton, but like Glasgowdan says, Cardross would be my choice. The drive from Erskine/Glasgow to Helensburgh is fine in the morning but going home will have you demented. I did it for 6 months and if I never see the A82 again I'd be delighted. Bearsden, Milngavie, Lenzie would be worth looking at. Also what about Strathblane/Drymen? Or there's further along the other side of Helensburgh - Arrochar, Garelochhead? A bit isolated in winter and overrun with tourists in the summer but fine for the area you're working in.Feb 2024:
