Wallpaper dado rail dilemma

:)Hi, I've never decorated a room before so am stuck with deciding how to use this amazing wallpaper I've chosen. I've decided to use the paper below the dado rail and paint above. However I also want to paper the chimney breast to show off the paper. If I do this can I still use the paper below the dado rail or should put it above? Will it look silly? if the dado rail didnt exist I probably would have papered the whole wall. Argh I have no clue -any advice appreciated. thanks :)

We thought about a dado rail but then realised how dated they look (not in a nice way). What about using the nice wallpaper on the chimney breast and the other 3 walls of the room and a plain paper on the rest of the wall around the breast?

It's fashionable to wallpaper both sides of the dado now. You don't need different colours up and down, just paper the whole lot.

Ultimately, do what you like but why wouldn't you choose to surround yourself with something 'amazing'? :T

Or paper above the dado rail and fit some nice wooden paneling below it - Used to be all the rage at the turn of the century :p

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • Thanks for your comments: the house is Victorian and ripping out the dado rail would probably cause a headache so we have to work with it. Doozergirl I love your thinking. It is pretty amazing paper . Decisions

    Which century?

I ripped all mine off & re-plastered the walls, but then I never could get that image out of my head :D

This century! Panelling is in. Blogs, Pinterest, magazines - it's all over the place. Clearly, it's place is in period home of some description but panelling sits well with modern interiors now.

Wallpaper manufacturers are even making wallpaper to look like wooden panelling.

And you lot jest about it!

I still think the OP should go wallpapertastic :). I'd like to see the wallpaper!

It depends on the paper I think, but in my home I plan to paper only below the dado rail, but the paper I like is a simple wide stripe in two fairly similar tones so I can then do above the rail in the lighter of the stripe colours. It's the hallway so one of the walls downstairs will be in the darker stripe colour but I have a horror of 'feature walls' (makes me think of the 1990s and Changing Rooms too much!) so I would never do a whole chimney breast in the paper. If the paper was really amazing, I might stick my favourite bits in a couple of picture frames instead though.
  • Thanks again guys. It won't let me post the link for the wallpaper but it is from lanacashire wallpaper . co.uk And it's the silver Crocodile skin one. Sounds random but it's amazing . I was so pleased when I got the sample. Fab quality.

My Parents/family home - had a dado rail - wallpaper below, and painting above and over ceiling.
My current semi - similar in age and build style, does not - I miss it - why - it's the easiest, most convenient place to hang pictures/paintings on. Otherwise, you are stuck with sticking fixings into the wall, which become a pain when you re-paper - if you take out the 'fixing' how much plaster do you end up having to redo!?
