This is not illegal in any way and is simply the right way of doing things, The only time a credit card payment can be returned elsewhere would be if you closed that particular credit card down and even then it would entail a delay and issues to get the refund placed to another card/account.

(Text removed by MSE Forum Team) Because I dared to say that the OP was wrong.

Tell you what MSE forum team 5 just PPR me instead as this is ludicrous to put a infraction for a trivial post, After you have done that try doing your job properly by looking at the actual posts on this forum that are worthy of being deleted/edited as my was most certainly not.

You have received an infraction from the MSE Forum Team

    Dear Stevie Palimo,

You have received an infraction from the MSE Forum Team.

    Type: Yellow Card
We've edited another post of yours after a previous quiet word, if we receive further similar reports posting privileges will be suspended for two weeks.
(QUOTE:'You are talking rubbish here and will not convince me that you are hard done by, As I stated you would be a customer that causes issues for most businesses and I would imagine that they would rather you kept away.

Final time your point is not so much of the legal side and in the posts you have made your main gripe is paying one way and believing that you are special and can have this returned another way, ')

This infraction is worth 1 point(s) and a further Yellow Card will result in a Red Card. If you receive a Red Card, you will be banned for two weeks. Any further infraction could result in your posting privileges being permanently removed.

Maybe you should consider doing all your shopping online if the cardholder returning to the shop is going to be a problem. Plus I find it much easier to sort out problems with online purchases and more convenient to send the item back at a local pickup points with long opening hours.

The faulty item I had was an online purchase. It was just returned to store.

Well common sense here would have been buy online return as online, Buy in store return as in store.

Agreeing with the OP, returning to store might be a lot easier than returning by post.

The "crediting to the same card" requirement might be because :
    1) A card company will accept a transaction being annulled, but a deposit for something unrelated might have a charge
    2) A refund to cash would be effectively a cash advance with no fee
