I'm writing this on behalf of my son who's currently residing at a hostel and isn't allowed access to phone or internet. He on licence after being released from prison and not due to see his supervising officer until next week, he's already surrounded to the police station to register to give his address, fingerprints and photo ect. He wants to know does he have to inform the DWP that he's on the sex offenders register and the conditions and why he's on it, this is causing him worry and stress because outside the probation and police service people are generally unaware he's on the register and he don't want the negative effects of people knowing too much about it.

He wants to claim ESA for anxiety and depression. Does he have to tell his supervising officer before he continue the process and will she tell the DWP, Can he request a man to do the ESA assessment or will they automatically appoint one?

No. The DWP don't need to be told that he's on the register. Their sole concern will be what his diagnosis is (depression) and if as a result of that if he is able to undertake work.

However, I would add that if it does come up light (for example it's metioned on medical evidence submitted to them) then it remains confidential and onlynthe staff that need to see the medical evidence will see it

If he were to end up with a JSA claim - possible if an ESA claim fails - then it may limit the work he could do/apply for so it would likely need knowing about at that point or he could be referred to inappropriate employment.

If attendance at medicals were needed, the venue might be problematic depending on other conditions ordered.

This is not something he should be relying on an internet forum for advice on. Depending on the conditions of his licence, this could affect him attending the Jobcentre (he may be invited when on ESA) or any assessment - these are both venues where women and children may be present (if relevant).

Could you call his officer, if he can't wait until next week? This is going to be something they deal with on an everyday basis so they'll know how to deal with it. Plus should there be an issue at a later date he'll be able to refer back to them.

If he is in a staffed probation/probation approved hostel the staff there will be able to help him deal with all this.

If he doesn't get ESA, presumably he will claim JSA. I'm not certain, but it is possible that he will be required to go on the Universal Job Match. If that's the case, he would have to tell his advisor at that point. He will obviously be limited to the jobs that he can apply for, not just because of his conviction, but also because he won't be able to apply online for jobs, or do any sort of job that requires internet access (including emailed payslips, online employee handbook, etc).

Those condemning ther guy without even knowing what he has done should at least read this https://www.theguardian.com/society/2002/may/28/childprotection because I don't think the situation has changed since it was written?

Some of the comments on here are what you hear from prisoners who have done lots of really nasty things, because they like to pretend there is someone worse than them, to take attention away from what they have done.:(

My B-in-L is on the SOR. He is/was (now in jail for an unrelated crime) claiming JSA.
Like the op's son, he was not allowed access to any computer that did not hav Net Nanny installed on it by the Police.

He had to inform the jobcentre about being on the SOR and they made notes on their system to make sure that he was not tobe reccommended for certain jobs, or to be sanctioned for failure to obtain employment as he had a major disadvantage.

The Jobcentre also had to supervise him on a 1-2-1 basis when he was using their computers for job-hunting as he could access other sites (such as 'indeed') when using the computer.

I'm assuming there have been some deletions? There's nothing like that until well after this comment and I just reported that one - from Dullville.
