Thanks for all your responses. I totally agree that proper nursery stock is far preferable but funds are very limited and I do know how to plant and prune, I'm just starting again with a bare patch and taking the long view!0

Yes, we picked up a sweet cherry from B&M a couple of weeks ago - I'm not expecting miracles though. Two out of three of my proper nursery-bought trees fruited well in the second year, am quite happy to wait for cherries! (suspect I'll never beat the birds to them anyway, but at least the blossom will be pretty :rotfl:).0
