Supermarket fruit trees

Hi folks, can someone please post an alert if they spot these bare root trees coming into stock? Both myself and my daughter would like to buy some as we both have "blank slate" gardens. Many thanks

The Aldi ones will be in store in the first ten days of February, usually on the Thursday, not Sunday specials.

I used to highly recommend these (within the bounds of supermarket trees, rather than supplied by a nursery). Last year's stock was, however, pretty poor compared with previous years. They were still good value for money, however.

Lidl supply a smaller range slightly later in the year, but they aren't particularly special.

Much as I recommend the Aldi ones, if you are looking for specimen trees for a blank-canvas garden, you would do better to visit a quality gardencentre, a nursery , or even using Keepers or Blackmoor, for example. Their range and quality are far, far higher.

But, Aldi trees are still good value, for what they are... :D

agree entirely with DaffyD regarding a specialist grower, just for the wide variety & quality

However as this is MSE then Asda do them as well, bit late now but I picked up a RFQS "Elstar" for £2.25 as they were making room for more mince pies & crackers

I got a James Grieve apple from Asda four years ago - it cost me £4.50 but has not come on half a well as the nursery supplied sibling.
I'm hoping the Braeburn I bought in November (also from Asda) does better, but if not, I'll dig them out & return to my usual bareroot supplier, Ashridge.

I've bought a number of these over the years and while they have done reasonably well, I do wish I had invested more in getting ones that were better suited to my garden and location. Many of the cultivars/root stocks available in these deals are designed for very small gardens, so you might need to be careful if you are looking for something that will grow to a decent size.

As DigForVictory says consider buyer trees from a proper Nursery.

We bought trees from ALDI/LIDL sub £10 and even 2 for £8 i think. They take a good while to become established and a couple of times not the same tree as per the label.

As these were becoming established we bought a family apple and a family pear tree from a from nursery. The following year the family trees produced some fruit and the year after they produced a LOT of fruit. OK they were £40 each but they are really worth the money.

We had 10kg of pears and 9kg of apples last year, 3 varieties of each fruit on each tree. ie.. Concorde, Conference and Comice? (or is there a KATY pear)? Smaller very sweet desert pear.

Pretty sure I saw some bareroot ones in Asda last week.

Having promoted Aldi trees higher up in the thread, I have a feeling they are no longer doing them. I'd have expected them to be released this week, and they are not. There's no sign of them coming up in the next two weeks either. I used to have an "insider", an Aldi manager who was a member of the same gardening club as I was, but he's (sadly) headed back to Europe in the Brexit Exit Exodus, and I've moved away from his store anyway.

So, no cheap Aldi trees, unless anyone knows differently?

Still, I'd recommend Blackmoor and Keepers, as above, as well as visiting a local nursery. I'm going to try a new local specialist this year, and I'll report in what I find in a few weeks!
  • I was waiting for Aldi Trees this spring but they don't seem to have materialised, but noticed that B&M bargains were selling theirs for 2 for £8 so went with those.

The selection isn't anything special, but the trees look decent enough, so we'll see what happens!
