How do you clean your windows .??

I use light solution of washing up liquid and clean with sponge. Then use an ikea window blade. I find these still leave streaks and I used to polish off with newspaper ....
but now we dont really buy the paper and more and was wondering if anyone uses a chamois - and would this do a good job.

Any other tips thankfully received.

I use an e-cloth, the green one for windows, just with water for normal cleaning. If there was something nasty on the window, I'd maybe use a sponge first then finish with the e-cloth. It is very easy to get a streak-free finish. It works well on shiny surfaces like the microwave door and the stainless steel hob too.

.... very rarely! But when we sold our last house (read, the first time we cleaned them in 6 years...) I simply used window cleaner solution, a rag to 'agitate' to muck, and then kitchen role to 'polish'. Seemed to do the trick. Some had to be done a couple of times but that was more than likely to do with them having multiple years worth of grime on them!

Couldn't agree more. Replaced the windows one more time than I cleaned them in the 20 years I was in the last house ...

    I don't usually.

The outsides are done by a window cleaner and the insides are usually done by my wife.

I do my fair share of chores around the house but window cleaning is not normally on my to do list.

Actually, revise that. I am usually the one who cleans any bird poop off the outsides.

I also clean our car windows inside and out.

Same gear as the professional use:

12" T bar with microfiber lamb's wool sleeve
    12" squeegee
    Towel to collect drips

Microfibre cloth and some window spray.

As for not cleaning windows in 20 years? Grim!

Do you mean on the inside or outside?
On the inside I use window cleaner spray with kitchen roll but on the outside I use washing up liquid with a sponge and finish off with, same as you, an Ikea squeege blade thing. I guess I'm not as fussy as you and I don't mind the odd streak, next time it rains they'll be more anyway. Oh and I only clean the outside once or twice a year, inside much more often.

Glass cleaner is far far more effective than dish washing liquid. No wonder you have streaks, OP..

Add a splash of vinegar to the water

I just use a damp microfibre. Has to be the very fine one that says for glass
  • Water. small amount of white vinegar, cloth and what I call a scrubby pad (to remove persistent particles). Use and then wipe windows with soft cotton tea towel.

This method will not leave smears.

I also use a steamer. Can be a lot quicker, no smears again but still need to wipe and/or buff windows.

Don't really see the point in a squeegee. Just buff with a tea towel.
