Why Do Some Cyclists Run Red Lights?

I've seen all kinds of vehicles go through red lights (including myself for which I was punished).
Cyclists probably do it just as much as road users..... you'd have to do some mathematics, but I bet it's close.0 -

plain and simple they are selfish....rules don't apply to me and I wont get caught.
funny though when they go under a cars wheels they are the first to be quoting the law and asking about insurance....0 -
Oh and I forgot its simply funny as fack when 2 cyclists do it on a junction and both come off after colliding with each other.0

I find it odd that the highway code covers bicycles yet the cyclist has no requirement at all to even read it.
Not a serious question but...Why should a cyclist know what a red light even means if there is no requirement for any kind of learning qualification?
There is a basic principle in law - ignorantia juris non excusat (ignorance of the law excuses no-one). If he doesn't know what a red light means he should find out.0 -

OP: Ever heard of a search function on a forum?
Do you really think this is the first time this question has been asked?
Have you stumbled across a conundrum that no one else has tackled?
This question has been asked countless time usually as a method of starting a flame war between motorists and cyclists and the originator just slinks off thinking he has been original and amusing.
Why not put your view into one of the hundreds of such threads on any motoring or indeed non-motoring forums?
it's not a new question at all...0 -
I am both a cyclist and a driver and in neither of my transport options do I go through a red light.
It does frustrate me when I see cyclists without helmets though...0 -

So something that is not legally required seems to frustrate you more than someone actually breaking a law. Interesting viewpoint.0 -

Not sure that is was I wrote and it certainly wasn't what I meant. Apologies if it appeared that is what I meant.0
