How can fuel be more expensive? Just checked back and there are numerous threads by the MSE team saying fuel is now cheaper, month after month...

Regional differences equate to around 50p per full tankful difference... (Ignoring NI). Slightly more for petrol and slightly less for diesel.

    Two words, click bait.

I thought the most obvious way to reduce what you pay would be to take up the sport of bilking :D

"Buy it where it is cheaper"
    "Don't use as much"

    Rocket Science eh? :rotfl:

    Thats the trick isnt it?

Buy from the cheapest viable supplier and if your fuel bill monthly is beyond what you'd like it to be, then drive less.

If your fuel bills are consistently higher than you'd like, then buy a more economical car next time you are due a change.

Sadly most people just don't think any more when it comes to motoring. Open your ears and you'll hear people boast that they added an extra n grand to their budget for a car because "this one has zero road tax" (it'll only take 15 years to recoup...), someone doing 3000 miles a year will buy a diesel because "fuel's cheaper, innit?" (completely ignoring that never recoup the extra they paid in fuel savings, not to mention they'll be paying for a new DPF in 18 months), people will do a 90 mile round trip to go to a particular large shopping centre because they need to go to WHSmiths but want to avoid paying £2 parking in their local town.

It ceases to amaze me that people will queue for several minutes for the pumps in Morrisons because it's a penny per litre cheaper than over the road, when for 40p more you can get filled up, browse the selection of gentleman's magazines, buy a bunch of flowers and use the complimentary air line before the alternate universe you has even pulled out the hose over at Mozza's.

maybe I missed the word "not" out then ;)

The point is, it is pretty obvious to everyone to buy where it is cheapest and use less.

More useful advice would be to blow the tyres upto the recommended pressure rather than run round with them virtually flat, take the 'bike rack off the roof, empty the junk out of the boot, and keep the windows closed. These are the sort of things people don't think about.

Rather like EON's helpul energy saving advice

    Use less....... :D
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Nope, just assumed 5p/L would be a good saving, it would be if filling hundreds of litres, but when your only putting 40-50L into a tank its not a lot at all, and much less than she assumed.

She didnt think to work it out.

Easiest way to save money on fuel? Slow down!

Your average commuter will drive like it's stolen. Bombing it down slip roads with a terrible urgency to get into Lane 3 ASAP. Every time the traffic in front moves they will accelerate and brake hard. Sure sometimes in rush hour you will need to accelerate hard to pull out in traffic or you'll never get out, but it's not a race. More often than not I will reach a junction half a dozen cars behind the driver that floored it at warp speed.

Leave 15 minutes earlier and chill. It's a change of mindset. I'm happy to sit at 60mph in Lane 1 chilling out before and after work. It's my music time. It's my thinking time.

We're all guilty of it though - "just nipping down to the shop" - people automatically jump in their car and / or dont think ahead in terms of getting stuff in to save them going again the next day.

Also, the more economical our cars become, the happier we are to drive them more.
