What to do with Amex cashback after first year

Options
I was just wondering what people do when their Amex cashback/points cards come to their anniversary date?

My OH has a card, on which I am a named cardholder. He originally got a Platimun Cashback card with a £25 fee. That card gave 5% cashback for the first 3 months, followed by 1% cashback up to £10k spending and 1.25% after the £10k.

We always pay off in full each month and we don't have any other debt apart from mortgage.

With a couple of months left to run before its anniversary we've 'earned' over £270 cashback, but £125 of that was from the initial 5% promo that obviously won't be repeated.

So what do people do at this point? If my OH called Amex to 'cancel his card' would they give a retention deal?

Or is it a possibility for me to get a new amex card in my name so we could do it again for a year? I don't have a wage and I don't know if Amex look at personal income or household income?

Then, if my OH were to close his Amex account, would he be able to open a new one in a year so we can keep swapping between a new card for me and a new card for him? Would that be a drain on our credit files?

Sorry for all the questions! What do people normally do to maximise their cashback?

  • Not sure how the credit card works but on the charge cards you can allocate credits to a transaction

the new cashback rate has dropped from 1.25% to 1% (and will drop for existing customers too at a notified date).
You can certainly go back to Amex after a break. Not sure if they consider household or individual income.
My card doesn't have a fee so I will be keeping it for a bit - I like the offers and shop small in December.
